[Also in Division H3] A device for detecting an information-bearing magnetic field comprises a superconductor film separating the information field and a second magnetic field, the arrangement being such that the combined effect of the fields is sufficient to switch the superconductor to normal when mutually assisting but not when mutually opposing each other. Fig. 2 shows a conventional trapped flux storage element 12 consisting of a tin film 1000 Š thick; drive elements 14 and 16 are used to write in data in the form of circulating currents resulting in a trapped flux such as H1. A second set of drive lines 20, 22 are used for read-out, these being associated with a second superconductor film 10 of tin 300-400 Š thick; these drive lines provide a second magnetic field H2. If the two magnetic fields adjacent film 10 mutually aid each other (i.e. run in opposite directions on opposite sides) film 10 is driven normal and allows field H2 to penetrate to a sense conductor 18 between the two films; if H1 and H2 mutually oppose each other there is no effect on conductor 18 so that this conductor senses the direction of the data bearing field H1.
