    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To drive a digital display so that a noise (erroneous color display) being sensible for a user is reduced by providing a lookup table outputting a color signal having resolution matching with resolution of a digital display. SOLUTION: A lookup table 22 receives a color signal of writing operation to a color palette chip 2 as an input, and outputs a color signal of resolution matching with resolution of a digital display 21. Therefore, when a user wishes to add a color to a color palette chip 2, color selection (appear in lines 28-30) of a user is interrupted by the lookup table 22 and the color is converted to a different color, outputted to the color palette chip 2 through lines 25-27, and written there. The color palette chip 2 sends analog signals R, G, B to the digital display 21 through lines 5-7.

    Abstract: A data processing network has a client connected to first and second servers in which the first and second servers are operable to communicate with the network according to first and second incompatible data communication protocols. The client is operable to issue, onto the network, a first initial boot request (e.g. RPL) according to the first data communication protocol (IEEE 802.2) and the first server is operable, in response to the client request to send BOOTP bootstrap code to the client system. The BOOTP bootstrap code is loaded into client memory and when executed causes the client to issue a BOOTP request for servicing by the second server system.

    Abstract: Enabling recovery when a user instructs a program to perform actions which destroy data stored on the computer or an associated computer, whilst still allowing for the deletion of information for the purposes of security and for freeing up disk space. User actions are managed to reduce the possibility of inadvertently destroying data, by testing, 208, 210, the consequences of the user action: if benign (i.e. where no information will be lost, or where any information that will be lost is backed up), the user action is completed, 212; if not benign, a delay ("cooling-off") period prior to completing the user action is initiated, 206. During this delay period, the user is able to cancel the user action, 216. The delay may be varied according to the relative consequences of the user action, setting a longer delay period for actions which are more destructive and which may take longer to recover from; longer delays may also be set for systems which store information of higher value.

    Abstract: A client is arranged so that at power up it makes a request to a server for first boot code which allows the client to boot from its own mass storage. Since the OS is not sent from the server over the network, traffic flow is eased whilst strict control of client software type is maintained. The configuration of a client may be checked prior to software, particularly OS, installation by a server. The server, detecting a new client on the network, down-loads scan code onto the client. The client then runs the scan code and returns hardware configuration data to the server. If the OS of the client is to be modified then the server sends different, second boot code to the client which instructs the client to boot (a new OS) directly from the server. The OS from the server is then installed on the client mass storage device, and subsequent IPLs take place using the first boot code.

    Abstract: A data processing network comprises a plurality of client systems and a controlling system which transmits "broadcast" data packets which may be received by any of the client systems attached to the network. The client system, on initial connection to the network, analyses the transmitted "broadcast" data packets and determines the network protocols in use on the network. The client system then configures software located at the client system so as to use one of the network protocols in use on the network. Furthermore, the client system customises the operating parameters it uses to communicate with the network so as to optimise the performance of communication with the network. Additionally, the client systems may, optionally, analyse transmitted non-broadcast data packets.
