Abstract: A client computer system 10 is adapted to connect to a server 16 across a network 20. The client system includes memory (25 or a storage medium) into which an operating system is loadable. The client includes a network card 12 having a PROM 14 adapted to download a bootstrap program 17 from the server. The bootstrap program is, in turn, adapted to load an operating system image 18 over the network from the server into a location in the memory. The client then boots from the operating system image in memory, with the client system being adapted subsequently to modify the operating system image in memory, without reloading the image over the network, and to re-boot the client system.

Abstract: A client is arranged so that at power up it makes a request to a server for first boot code which allows the client to boot from its own mass storage. Since the OS is not sent from the server over the network, traffic flow is eased whilst strict control of client software type is maintained. The configuration of a client may be checked prior to software, particularly OS, installation by a server. The server, detecting a new client on the network, down-loads scan code onto the client. The client then runs the scan code and returns hardware configuration data to the server. If the OS of the client is to be modified then the server sends different, second boot code to the client which instructs the client to boot (a new OS) directly from the server. The OS from the server is then installed on the client mass storage device, and subsequent IPLs take place using the first boot code.

Abstract: Graphic user interface apparatus, for a server computer system which is connectable to a plurality of client computer systems in a computer network, comprises means for displaying a plurality of client indicators, each signifying a different one of the client computer systems, and a plurality of profile indicators, each signifying a different function stored in the server computer system and executable by one or more of the client computer systems. Means is provided for associating a selected profile indicator with a selected client indicator. Loading means loads, in response to the association, the function signified by the selected profile indicator from the server computer system to the client computer system signified by the selected client indicator.

Abstract: A data processing network comprising at least one client system connected to first and second server systems, the first and second server systems being operable to communicate with the network according to first and second incompatible data communication protocols respectively. The client system being operable to issue, onto the network, first and second boot requests (210,240) according to the first and second data communication protocols for servicing by either the first or second server systems (230,260) respectively.

Abstract: A data processing network comprises a plurality of client systems and a controlling system which transmits "broadcast" data packets which may be received by any of the client systems attached to the network. The client system, on initial connection to the network, analyses the transmitted "broadcast" data packets and determines the network protocols in use on the network. The client system then configures software located at the client system so as to use one of the network protocols in use on the network. Furthermore, the client system customises the operating parameters it uses to communicate with the network so as to optimise the performance of communication with the network. Additionally, the client systems may, optionally, analyse transmitted non-broadcast data packets.

Abstract: A method for backing up data stored using a filing system on a computer non-volatile storage device is described. First pre-defined signature data is written, using the filing system, to substantially all of the unused portion of the computer non-volatile storage device. The data stored on the computer non-volatile storage device is then backed up, independent of the filing system. Data consisting of the first pre-defined signature is not backed up. In this manner, a backup is completed without access to the filing system, but which backs up only portions of the non-volatile storage medium which are in use.

Abstract: A method for backing up data stored using a filing system on a computer non-volatile storage device, such that the backup is completed without access to the filing system, but areas of the storage device which are not in use by the filing system are not backed up. In a preparation phase, pre-defined signature data are written, using the filing system, to substantially all of the unused portions of the storage device (Fig. 2). In a second phase, the data stored on the storage device are backed up, independent of the filing system, but data consisting of the pre-defined signature are not backed up. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 4), all the data, including the signature data, are backed up, but data compression is used to save space and the signature is made highly compressible such that the unused space is compressed to take up very little space on the backup storage medium. Another embodiment additionally addresses the problem of personalisation of some files associated with a target operating system before the target operating system boots (Figs. 6-8).

Abstract: A data processing network comprises a plurality of client systems (30,32,34,36) and a controlling server system (20) operable to issue wake-up requests to the client systems to cause them to issue boot requests onto the network for servicing by a connected server system. The controlling system, which may be embodied in the server system or in a separate system issues the wake-up requests in accordance with a wake-up schedule calculated, for each client, to complete the boot process for that client before a target start-up time when that client user normally uses the client system.
