    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoding method for reproducing an image of high picture quality by permitting a user to select picture quality and data quantity in multiple stages and adding data to compression data which can be decoded. SOLUTION: An original image is divided at every object area having prescribed correlation and the hierarchy structure of the object area is decided 62. The object area is plane-approximated 63 with more than one polygonal plane so that a luminance value and the errors of colors become within prescribed thresholds. A primary difference image is obtained 64 by obtaining a difference between the original image and the image which is plane- approximated. An nth order (n>=1) difference image is encoded, compressed 65 and the image which is plane-approximated and the encoded nth other difference image are stored 66. The (n+1)th order difference image is obtained 67 from a difference between the image obtained by expanding the compressed nth order difference image with the nth order difference image.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To highly and certainly retrieve a color area by constituting a tree structural data reaching a root node by using a block including at least one picture element in a color picture area as a leaf node, and applying a color index based on a sensory color system to each node. CONSTITUTION: A color system converter 20 of a tree structural data preparing unit 2 converts RGB data 28 of each picture element of a memory 26 into HLS(hue, lightness, and saturation) data 30 of a sensory color system. A color class deciding device 22 divides the color space of the sensory color system into color classes, and decides color class data 32 of each picture element. A tree structural data converter 24 prepares a tree structure in which the least significant level is defined as a leaf node NB110 and the most significant level is defined as a root node NB by using, for example, a four divided-tree. A minimum block B110 corresponding to the leaf node NB110 is constituted of, for example, four picture elements, and the color index of the leave node NB110 is decided from the color class of each picture element. Then, the color index is applied to each node from the lower rank node to the upper rank node reaching the root node NB.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide highly efficient data compression with simple conversion by dividing an image into plural picture element areas, obtaining the luminance values of the respective picture element areas and the parameter of a color, merging the plural picture element areas and generating a primary block candidate. SOLUTION: Digital picture data is inputted to an image input means 11 and is divided into the plural picture element areas by a parameter making means 12. The luminance values and the parameter of the color are obtained on the respective picture element areas. A generation/classification means 13 merges the plural picture element areas and generates the primary block candidate and it is classified to one of the plural patterns. A linear approximation conversion part 14 groups the primary block candidate where the luminance value of the picture element area and the parameter of the color can linearly be approximated/converted as a primary block among the primary block candidates belonging to the same classification and a conversion coefficient is expressed by the parameter. Then, a secondary block is grouped and a multidimensional block parameter is finally obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To easily constitute a moving picture data base. CONSTITUTION:A scene information editor 12 takes still picture data of representative frames of plural scenes out of a representative frame file, rearranges the still pictures in time order along a time base, and displays them on the screen of a display 14. Then, moving picture data are read out of a laser disk(LD) 16 as to a period corresponding to part of the time base that the user indicates and displayed on a TV monitor. The scene information editor takes information given to those scenes out of a scene information file 21 and graphically display them on the screen of the display 14 at the same time. Then, when the user inputs an editing command, the command is executed to edit the scene information file 21.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To simplify user's instruction operation and to easily find desired data by displaying representative data and designating a retrieval range by a user. CONSTITUTION: A scroll bar display 21 is used to set an initial frame retrieval range by the user. In a window display are Q, a predetermined number (e.g. 10) of reduced frames 23, i.e., representative frames, and a start-point icon 22A and an end-position 22B are displayed. All data to be retrieved are divided into 10 and the frames positioned at the division positions are read out of a file storage device and reduced with the indication of a CPU for a frame 23. Each frame 23 indicates a division position in the currently set retrieval range, so the icon 22A and 22B and representative frames are selectively used for the range specification of retrieval. Then the user reduces the retrieval range by using a representative screen on a display screen and can retrieve a desired frame.

When a center area 50 is selected as shown by (D), an arrow 64 or 66 is displayed as shown by (E) or (F) according to an indicated direction (plus or minus), the display area is moved the direction of one dimensions other than the two dimensions, and the display information is switched.
