Abstract: A text terminal in which a text stream received on a communication link is segmented by a segmenter into chained variable-length segments which are stored in a random access text store. Each segment can contain at most one extended formatting command. Segments have slack areas to allow the subsequent insertion of text. A text editor receives keystroke signals from a keyboard and modifies the stored text stream, new segments being created as necessary for extended formatting commands or when slack areas are full. An interpreter/formatter is invoked when a received text stream has been segmented or when the stored text stream has been modified to format and map the stored text stream into a refresh buffer driving a cathode ray tube (CRT) display. The interpreter/formatter maintains a status index with condensed versions of the extended formatting commands stored in the text stream. Formatting is inhibited by the editor if it receives a keystroke requiring modification of the stored text. After editing segmented text is desegmented by a desegmenter and returned to the host along a communication link in the form in which it was received. Preferably, the terminal is implemented with a microprocessor which can also control standard data entry applications as well as text processing.

Abstract: A voice processing system, method and computer program product therefor, allows telephone callers without computers to access World Wide Web pages from the Internet. Usual graphical-based Hyper-Text Mark-Up language (HTML) commands are interspersed with special HTML tags including the commands and data for forming a voice application, which, when run on the voice processing system, provides a voice browser for allowing telephone callers to access Web pages. The voice application tags are provided together with the remainder of the HTML document, thus facilitating editing of the combined data. This helps to keep the graphical browser and voice browser versions of the same data set synchronized.

Abstract: A system for automatic recognition of foreign speakers analyses (402) a speech sample and attempts to match the resulting signal to one of a plurality of predetermined sounds to produce recognition, it is determined whether a gap exists in a table of predetermined sounds in a predetermined language and, if a gap exists, a sound from a position in the table near the gap is substituted. This automatic substitution of known foreign pronunciation characteristics improves and modifies the output from standard, monolingual automatic speech recognition (ASR). There is no requirement to implement adaptation or to impose additional manual modification of the baseform pool on the application developer. In addition, the danger of increased ambiguity is removed by introducing an explicit accent and/or language checker (408) which queries known differences across accents.

Abstract: A phonetic spell checker comprises a dictionary table (10) having a plurality of entries each including an orthography and an associated pronunciation, said pronunciation comprising one or more phonemes; and a weightings table (14) having a plurality of entries, each including a cluster comprising one or more letters, a cluster pronunciation comprising one or more phonemes and a weighting for said pronunciation of said cluster. A user interface receives a word to be checked, a clustering mechanism divides the word into a plurality of clusters, each cluster having one or more pronunciations, each pronunciation comprising one or more phonemes. Pronunciations of the word are ordered according to the associated weightings of the cluster pronunciations in the weighting table; and the dictionary is searched for an orthography whose associated pronunciation matches at least the most heavily weighted pronunciation.

Abstract: The present invention relates to establishing a communication channel between two communication systems having computer telephony integration (CTI). Many CTI systems are configured into incoming and outgoing lines according to the anticipated demands. Consequently, if sufficient outgoing or incoming capacity is unavailable at a given time to support a communication channel of required characteristics, the users of such a system must conventionally wait until sufficient capacity becomes available. However, the present invention determines who the intended addressee is and can instruct the CTI system associated with that addressee to instigate the establishment of a communication channel to the user who originally desired the connection. The instructions can be sent to the intended addressee using for example, another communication network, such as the Internet or other data communications network. This arrangement also allows the call to be placed in the reverse direction, where this is favourable for tariff reasons.

Abstract: A method is provided for determining which of a plurality of telephone networks 1, 2, 3 should be used to establish a communication channel between two communication systems S1, S2, or for determining whether system S1 or S2 should establish the connection. The network 1,2 or 3 to be used may be determined according to which provides least cost routing, or according to factors such as bandwidth and reliability of the network lines, or the type of connection when both satellite and ground line providers are available. If a user in system S1 desires a connection to an addressee in system S2, it may be determined that the addressee in system S2 should instigate the establishment of a communication channel if system S1 has insufficient outgoing lines or bandwidth, or system S2 has insufficient incoming lines or bandwidth, or if tariffs are such that a call in the reverse direction from system S2 to system S1 would be cheaper. The determination of which system should instigate connection establishment (call setup direction) may be made by system S1 or S2 or by a third system (S3, Fig.6). Systems S1 and S2 may have computer telephony integration (CTI) with telephones connected to switches or PBX's 130, 230, and computer workstation terminals connected to servers 150, 250 with links to the Internet 160 (or to a corporate intranet) via which messages are exchanged when setting up a communication channel over a telephone network.

Abstract: A visual display unit with character overstrike capability includes a text store in which text is stored in data stream form. A formatter formats the stored text and loads character codes into a refresh buffer which together with a character generator display the characters on a raster scanned cathode ray tube. Control logic responsive to a backspace character combines the bit patterns corresponding to the characters preceding and succeeding the backspace character in a temporary store and then stores the composite bit pattern in the character generator and a pointer thereto in the refresh buffer. The control logic can be inhibited to allow the individual characters constituting the composite character to be displayed individually for editing purposes.
