Abstract: The distributed data processing system has a server, which stores the information, a logging tool for creating a log file, and a client computer comprising an application program for controlling a software agent such as a robot. When the software agent requests information from the server, a process to identify the software agent is invoked. In response to the identification, all the requests from the identified software agent are stored in the log file and this data in the log file is analysed. The data is also utilised in the process of monitoring the behaviour of the identified software agent. In response to the monitoring process, at least one of a plurality of pre-defined rules is invoked, in order to control the behaviour of the identified software agent. The system is particularly applicable to controlling the access of a robot to a web site. Dummy links are inserted into web pages, and robots are identified, using a probabilistic threshold approach, based on the number of those dummy links which are followed.

The system provides a barge-in facility for the recognition resource on the remote server, whereby a prompt is played out to the user, and the incoming telephony signal is fed into a voice activity detector on the digital trunk processor. Responsive to a detection of incoming voice activity, the outgoing prompt is terminated, and the incoming data is transferred over the local area network to the remote server for recognition.

Abstract: A bus connection controller in a voice processing is for managing the connection of a timeslot on a time-division multiplex (TDM) bus to a port on an adapter. The voice processing system includes basic time-division multiplex (TDM) connection management to enable the coordination of connections between resources such as channels on line cards (SPacks or VPacks), and channels on digital signal processor (DSPs) cards that provide, amongst others things, voice recognition, text-to-speech, fax capabilities and so on. One of the problems with known voice processing systems having a TDM bus is that there is no facility to allow the use of third party devices without modifications being made to the TDM connection controller. The bus controller comprises: a custom server 42 for sending a first request including a port identifier and using a first protocol for connection or disconnection of a port indicated by said port identifer on an adapter to the TDM bus 26; a timeslot manager for analyzing the first request to determine the port availability and state and for making a second request; device driver means (48), corresponding to the particular adapter, for sending the appropriate signals to the adapter to connect or disconnect the port on the adapter to a time slot 28 on the TDM; and a connection server 46, corresponding to a particular adapter, for analyzing the second request and for making a third request to the device driver means (48) using a second protocol for connection or disconnection of the port on that adapter to the TDM bus 26.

Abstract: A method is described for performing distributed genetic programming using a server 10 and a plurality of client machines 20 which are connected together by a computer network 30 such as the Internet. The genetic programming seeks to optimise a population of individuals (program versions) against one or more predetermined fitness criteria. The method includes downloading instructions for performing a fitness evaluation on an individual from the server to the client machines; distributing individuals from the population of individuals from the server across the plurality of client machines; and evaluating the fitness of the distributed individuals at the client machines by using the downloaded instructions. Those individuals which have the best fitness are preferentially selected for breeding to produce the next generation of individuals. This breeding is preferably also performed on the client machines. The method may also be used for performing a distributed genetic algorithm.

Abstract: A voice processing system, method and computer program product therefor, allows telephone callers without computers to access World Wide Web pages from the Internet. Usual graphical-based Hyper-Text Mark-Up language (HTML) commands are interspersed with special HTML tags including the commands and data for forming a voice application, which, when run on the voice processing system, provides a voice browser for allowing telephone callers to access Web pages. The voice application tags are provided together with the remainder of the HTML document, thus facilitating editing of the combined data. This helps to keep the graphical browser and voice browser versions of the same data set synchronized.
