Abstract: Electrolytic apparatus employing a reference electrode, e.g. an electrochromic display of the type employing potentiostatic control of write or erase operations, has at least one reference electrode on which a predetermined coating thickness of electrochromic or other electrodepositable material is maintained or replenished by intermittent connection of the electrode to a source of write current. Such a coated reference electrode has a stable potential with respect to the solution which is necessary for potentiostatic control. Two such reference electrodes may be used alternately such that one is being erased and rewritten while the other is connected as a reference.

Abstract: When electrochromic display electrodes are connected in groups in parallel through transistor switches leakage of charge and so diffusion of deposited electrochromic species takes place from the written to the unwritten electrodes of the group. This is prevented by ensuring that every electrode of the group has at least a monolayer of species deposited thereon. Such monolayers are invisible but equalise the potentials on each electrode.

Abstract: According to the disclosure, electrochromic display apparatus is provided, comprising, an electrolyte containing an electrochromic material, a plurality of display electrodes in the electrolyte, the display electrodes being connected in at least one group to enable selection of display electrodes, means for selecting at least some display electrodes, means to effect deposition of a visible coating of colored species derived from the electrochromic material onto the selected display electrodes, and means to effect deposition of an invisible coating of the colored species onto all unselected display electrodes, whereby the potentials of selected and unselected display electrodes are equalized.

Abstract: ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY DEVICE In a flat panel electrochromic display, the counter electrode is in the form of a pattern of opaque conductive lines on the underside of the front face of the panel. The electrode is precharged to a known potential by depositing electrochromic material thereon. This arrangement solves the erasure problem for matrix displays with a large number of display electrodes.

Abstract: A functional memory cell circuit is provided with a sense line and a drive line for each word, and a pair of search lines for each digit. A plurality of binary cells are arranged in arrays. Circuitry is provided for causing current to flow in the word sense lines in response to mismatches between the signal states of the digit search lines as compared with the respective signal states of the binary cells. The amplitudes of the search currents in the word sense lines are relatively constant irrespective of the number of mismatches in each word.
