    Abstract: A system comprising a transmitter and receiver includes an automatic message prediction system. The receiver receives at least a portion of a message and tries to identify a previously received message stored in a buffer by comparison with the received portion. If a match is found the receiver generates an identifier for the stored message, which may comprise a checksum and an indication of the number of packets remaining in the message, and transmits this to the message transmitter. The transmitter compares the received identifier with information about the message being transmitted and if the two match then it transmits a prediction correct signal and ceases transmitting the message. Upon receipt of a prediction correct signal the receiver reconstructs the message from the previously received message in storage. If the identifier and message information do not match the transmitter continues to send the message, and may also send a prediction incorrect signal. The system could be implemented using proxies at the transmitter and receiver.

    Abstract: A message viewer for generating a prioritized view of a plurality of messages stored in an email mailbox is disclosed. The viewer includes a script for defining one or more concepts against which a message can be prioritized, the or each concept comprising one or more conditions against which a message can be tested. A display script operates on each message, to generate a fit to a selected one or more of the concepts, the fit corresponding to whether or not the message fulfils the conditions. Once complete, the display script creates a display representative of the respective fits of the messages to the one or more selected concepts, using display cells with an intensity of colour or with a length in accordance with the fit, Figs. 4,5, (not shown).

    Detecting replication of a computer virus using a counter virus

    Abstract: A counter virus agent for detecting viral infection of a computer system. The agent identifies potential host files for the agent within the computer system, and controls replication of the agent within the host files so that it is maintained at a predetermined population level, whilst moving its presence around the file system. When instantiated within one of the host files, the agent determines the population of the counter virus within the computer system. When the predetermined population level is exceeded, possible viral infection of the computer system is indicated, since the counter virus is designed so that it is replicated along with the malicious virus. This replication can be ensured simply using a macro virus to detect unauthorised macro viruses; however with executable code viruses, which replicate by copying only a specific number of bytes into an uninfected file, the counter virus agent must amend the unauthorised virus to ensure that it is successfully copied along with it, for example by compressing the virus and the counter virus.
