    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and compact optical system for full color high resolution projection type display using a reflective double-refracting spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal light valve. SOLUTION: This optical system is provided with reflective double-refracting light valves 26-28, a polarized beam splitter 22, color image coupling prisms 30-32, a lighting system 18, a projection lens 38, color/contrast control filters 43-46 and a screen 39 arranged in constitution to provide an advantage of high resolution color display. This optical system is provided with a quarter wavelength plate 48 arranged to suppress stray reflection from the projection lens 38. This optical system is also provided with a second quarter wavelength plate 50 arranged at the screen 39, and a polarizing film 52 arranged at the second quarter wavelength plate 50 so as to restrain the light in the surroundings from illuminating the screen 39 and entering the optical system.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display panel having heightened luminance and heightened radiation distribution of light emitted from the liquid crystal display panel. SOLUTION: In a direct view liquid crystal display device 1, a lenticular lens sheet 5 is disposed on the rear surface of the liquid crystal display panel 4. Light irradiating lenses 52 of the lenticular lens sheet 5 once converges in the liquid crystal display panel 4 and subsequently diffuses and when the light is emitted from the liquid crystal display panel 4 the radiation distribution of the light is broadened.     Abstract: An optical system is described consisting of reflection birefringent light valves, polarizing beam splitter, color image combining prisms, illumination system, projection lens, filters for color and contrast control, and screen placed in a configuration offering advantages for a high resolution color display. In particular, the present invention includes a color splitting prism assembly having a plurality of output faces through which a separate color component is directed to be reflected by a respective light valve.     Abstract: An illumination system and display includes a light. a polarising beam splitter (PBS) having a first surface that receives the light from the backlight. The PBS passes a first polarisation of the received light to a curved mirror located at a second PBS face, which second PBS face is opposite the first PBS face. The curvature of the mirror provides the optical power necessary for proper imaging, while limiting the reflecting area of the mirror provides an aperture stop that determines the numerical aperture of the optical system. The display also includes a quarter wave plate and a spatial light modulator (SLM). The quarter wave plate is located between the PBS and mirror and changes the first polarisation of light, directed from the PBS to the mirror, to a second polarisation which is reflected from the mirror back to the PBS. The SLM receives this second polarisation of light after reflection thereof by the PBS, and selectively rotates the second polarisation of light to form an image forming light having the first polarisation, which is reflected back to the PBS. Through an exit face, the PBS provides the rotated image forming light to a viewer. Between the viewer and the PBS exit surface, an imaging lens system is provided that includes at least one folding mirror.

    Abstract: An optical system having a substantially flat image field (14) is disclosed. The optical system is formed from optical subsystem(18, 12, 20, 22) wherein an input optical subsystem (8) forms an intermediate image (10) which is the object of an output optical system (12). The intermediate image has a curvature which compensates that from the remaining optical components of the system to result in a substantially flat image for the optical system. Preferably, the optical elements preceding the intermediate image and the optical elements succeeding the intermediate image are separately corrected for odd aberrations. The optical elements preceding the intermediate image and the optical elements succeeding the intermediate image compensate for each other and result in a substantially aberration free flat image for the optical system. The optical system preferably contains an input optical subsystem (8) and an output optical subsystem (12) wherein the input optical subsystem is a catadioptric system and wherein the output optical system is a dioptric system. Most preferably the input optical system is a 1X catadioptric system and the output optical system is an NX dioptric system. The optical systems of the present invention are used for subquarter micron photolithography tools for microelectronic fabrication, such as scanners and steppers.
