Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To essentially remove the glare, a ghost image, and the reflection of unnecessary light by allowing each prism to have two surfaces adjacent to its base and arranging prisms so that those surfaces contain an angle other than 90 deg. on the opposite sides of the base and form two crossing specified color reflecting surfaces in an X prism. SOLUTION: The X prism 115 includes four prisms, each of which has two surfaces B' and R' coated with dichroic materials for different color separation on the opposite sides of the base. The X prism 115 is characterized by that the internal angle between dichroic planes, i.e. the angles on the opposite sides of the bases of the respective prisms are not 90 deg.. The proper internal angle of the four prisms is 84 or 96 deg.. The X prism 115 is so arranged that surfaces B' and R' having similar dichroic coatings form two crossing specified color reflecting surfaces in the X prism 115.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and compact optical system for full color high resolution projection type display using a reflective double-refracting spatial light modulator such as a liquid crystal light valve. SOLUTION: This optical system is provided with reflective double-refracting light valves 26-28, a polarized beam splitter 22, color image coupling prisms 30-32, a lighting system 18, a projection lens 38, color/contrast control filters 43-46 and a screen 39 arranged in constitution to provide an advantage of high resolution color display. This optical system is provided with a quarter wavelength plate 48 arranged to suppress stray reflection from the projection lens 38. This optical system is also provided with a second quarter wavelength plate 50 arranged at the screen 39, and a polarizing film 52 arranged at the second quarter wavelength plate 50 so as to restrain the light in the surroundings from illuminating the screen 39 and entering the optical system.

Abstract: A magnetographic printing head (26) comprises an array of crossed elongated bar-shaped print elements (58, 62) each of which is individually magnetizable by electrical conductors (40) wound about respective ones of the print elements (58, 62). The print elements (58, 62) are arranged in two parallel arrays which are spaced apart from each other to define a passage (24) through which a magnetic medium (22) is to be passed for the imprinting of marks (66) thereon. A mark (66) can be imprinted at each cross point (64) of the crossed arrays upon application of sufficient magnetizing current to each of the print elements (58, 62) at the cross point (64). The print elements (58, 62) are specifically shaped to provide for concentration of magnetic fields at the cross points (64) in two dimensions to accomplish high resolution printing. The concentration of the fields is accomplished in one embodiment of the invention by the use of a knife-edge (68) configuration to opposed facing surfaces of the elements of the opposed arrays, and in a second embodiment by a set of pedestals (72) upstanding from the elements of one of the arrays. The resulting configuration of the print head (26) has structural simplicity which permits economical fabrication while retaining high resolution in the printing.
