Abstract: An integrated data storage disk and disk drive assembly includes a rotatably supported magnetic disk for storing data. A rotor is fixedly joined to the disk for rotating the disk, and includes a plurality of rotor poles. A stator includes a plurality of stator poles positioned around the rotor for sequentially cooperating with respective ones of the rotor poles for rotating the rotor to rotate the disk. The disk and drive may be fabricated using lithographic and electroplating techniques, and a plurality of coaxial disks may be driven by a single disk drive in exemplary embodiments.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the influence of a speed jitter without reducing the interval by calculating the isolation of reading and writing elements based on the difference of first and second delay times and the rotating speed of a disk. SOLUTION: The system of a self-servo writing unit has an electronic block including a radial propagation controller 2, a timing propagating controller 4 and a pattern generator 6. The method for deciding the isolation between reading and writing elements of a head in this unit is decided by the following steps. The first step positions the head in the first radius of a disk to decide the first reading and writing time delay. The second step positions the head in the second radius of the disk to decide the second reading and writing element delay. Further, the third step calculates the isolation of the reading and writing elements based on the difference of the first and second delays and rotating speed of the disk. Thus, suitable positioning is conducted.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for self-servowriting which are more flexible and to overcome the defects of known self-servowriting technology. SOLUTION: The method and system for self-servowriting to a data storage medium are disclosed and include a step or means for servo control over the propagation bursts of a propagation pattern arranged on a track other than a last track. A reference level used for positioning a recording head is kept within a usable dynamic range needed, to hold servo track intervals constant over the medium. The method and system are described, in relation to a rotary actuator having read and write heads at an interval. A similar method for writing a trigger or timing bursts of the propagation pattern is also disclosed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improvement of pattern arrangement when servo information is written by the head of its own by correcting random errors and systematic errors due to the shape influence of the head, generated at a time when trigger patterns are written on a disk. SOLUTION: This method for deciding the value of the systematic error in the case of generating the trigger patterns on a rotating disk, has a step ion which a 1st time interval T146 between 1st and 2nd trigger patterns written by the head positioned at a 1st radial position ST#1 on the disk is measured, a step in which a 2nd time interval T145 between a 3rd trigger pattern written by the head positioned at a 2nd radial position ST#2 on the disk and the 2nd trigger pattern, and a step in which the 1st time interval is compared with the 2nd time interval to decide the value of the systematic error. As a result, it is possible to prevent the propagation of an error of a pattern position.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique of self-servo writing of servo patterns on a data memory medium. SOLUTION: The initial set of servo pattern tracks is written by moving an actuator so as to strike against a compliant structure (for example, a crash stop) by applying a first force and holding the actuator at a first position for writing the first track of the servo pattern. The actuator is made to arrive at a second position in contact with the compliant structure by changing this force and the second track is written in this position. This process is repeated with respect to the tracks of the structure. The distance (i.e., overlap) between the written tracks is measured by using the reading element of the actuator and this measured distance is compared with the prescribed desired distance. If the measured distance is within a range of assigned allowance, the process is completed.

Abstract: Improvements in placement of timing patterns in self servo writing include correcting for random and systematic errors due to geometric effects. In a disk drive having a recording head with separate read and write elements, a method for determining separation between the elements and for correcting for such errors as a function of skew angle between the head and the disk. Errors resulting from misalignment and non-parallelism of the elements as well as misalignment of the head on it its actuator are also detected and corrected. Errors due to changes in rotational velocity of the disk and misplacement of timing patterns with respect to adjacent timing patterns are detected and corrected. In general, a single revolution process may be used to both write and detect random errors on each track and corrected on subsequent tracks.

Abstract: METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR SELF-SERVOWRITING A DATA STORAGE MEDIUM ARE DISCLOSED, INCLUDING SERVOING TO PROPAGATION BURSTS OF A PROPAGATION PATTERN LOCATED IN TRACKS OTHER THAN AN IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING TRACK. REFERENCE LEVELS USED TO POSITION A RECORDING HEAD ARE ACCORDINGLY KEPT IN A USABLE DYNAMIC RANGE NECESSARY TO KEEP SERVO TRACK SPACING CONSTANT ACROSS THE MEDIUM. THE METHODS AND SYSTEMS ARE DISCLOSED IN CONNECTION WITH A ROTARY ACTUATOR HAVING SPACED READ AND WRITE HEADS. SIMILAR METHODS ARE DISCLOSED FOR WRITTING TRIGGER OR TIMING BURSTS OF THE PROPAGATION PATTERN.
