PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power control method for a magnetic disk device for efficiently reducing power consumption of the magnetic disk device without reducing its processing efficiency. SOLUTION: The power control method for the magnetic disk device has a step for determining whether the kind of the last instruction transmitted to the magnetic disk device is a read instruction or a write instruction; a step for setting different stand-by time according to the result of the above determination about the kind of the instruction; and a step for transmitting, to the magnetic disk device, an idle instruction for shifting the magnetic disk device into an idle state of low power consumption, on condition that the stand-by time has elapsed from the completion of processing of the last transmitted instruction by the magnetic disk device. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately set a device controller having two operation modes corresponding to the installation state of a device driver. SOLUTION: The device controller is operated in the two operation modes of an old operation mode in which it is operated by an old device driver and a new operation mode in which it is operated by a new device driver. For an OS, there is the case that the old device driver is introduced but the new device driver is not introduced. A BIOS sets the device controller to the old operation mode and activates a computer. In the operation environment of the OS, the presence/absence of the new device driver is inspected. SOLUTION: In a notebook type PC, when a bay device 32 is hot-swapped/ warm-swapped with two connectors 72A and 72B connected to an IDE controller 70, a bay controller electrically (virtually) disconnects the connectors 72A and 72B once, and the bay device 32 is mounted and dismounted in this state. After completing the mounting or dismounting, the bay device 32 left on the connectors 72A and 72B is detected and brought into a usable state by carrying out predetermined setting to a master, a slave or the like. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a computer system, a power supply managing method, etc., capable of performing power supply rich in variation. SOLUTION: This computer system performs power supply control in a gate array 42 based on an indication of an OS and a BIOS on an on mode with respect to a bay device 33 connected to a bay 32, and performs power supply control by an embedded controller 41 in a sleep mode and an off mode. By using an OR gate 71, setting is performed so that output signals (BAY- ON- EC and BAY- ON- GA) from the embedded controller 41 and the gate array 42 do not interfere with each other.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an input method using a pointing device capable or precisely recognizing the latch state of the pointing device and eliminating the erroneous operation in a transition to the latch state, and a portable information terminal equipped with the function thereof. SOLUTION: In this input method using the pointing device, an application is made to recognize the ON state of the pointing device by ON-operation and the OFF state of the pointing device by OFF operation. The input method comprises a step for realizing the latch state for keeping the ON state in the application even if the OFF operation of the pointing device is performed in response to the continuation of the ON operation of the pointing device for a given length of time, and a step for executing a program for making a user recognize the realization of the latch state.

SOLUTION: The portable notebook PC (computer device) has a normal operation mode enabling the use of the notebook PC by a user, a power saving mode for saving a work executed in the normal operation mode to a predetermined memory, and using only the minimum power necessary for holding data to suppress the consumption of power, and a moving mode for stopping a function which may cause a fault in case of moving the notebook PC while maintaining a CPU in an operating state to temporarily disable the system.
