Abstract: The head 1 of a disc data store is driven to a target position by energising the motor 2 to produce a first, acceleration phase, a second, constant speed phase and a third, deceleration phase. During the constant speed phase, the speed is monitored to determine whether it is within a predetermined range of speeds. If it is, no drive current is applied to the motor. If it is outside the range, correcting drive current is applied. The purpose is to reduce audible noise and power consumption. The system may be used in a computer.

Abstract: METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR DETECTING AND CORRECTING FOR UNDESIRABLE VIBRATIONS IMPACTING THE SERVO SYSTEMS (20,2020) IN DATA STORAGE DEVICES (10,2010). A DETECTION TECHNIQUE IS PROVIDED WHEREIN A DETECTION FILTER (40,50,140,240,2040) IS CONFIGURED TO SCAN A POSITION SIGNAL OF THE SERVO SYSTEM ACROSS A RANGE OF FREQUENCIES, AND, AT EACH RESPECTIVE SCANNED FREQUENCY, RECORD AN AMPLITUDE ASSOCIATED THEREWITH. THE RECORDED AMPLITUDES ARE EXAMINED TO DETERMINE WHETHER ANY EXCEED A THRESHOLD, THEREBY LOCATING A PEAK FREQUENCY OF THE VIBRATION. USING THE DETECTED PEAK FREQUENCY OF THE VIBRATION, A CORRECTIVE FILTER IS CONFIGURED TO OPERATE ABOUT THE PEAK FREQUENCY OF VIBRATION, THEREBY REDUCING ITS IMPACT ON THE POSITION SIGNAL IN THE SERVO SYSTEM. OPTIMUM DETECTION AND CORRECTION FILTER STRUCTURE ARE DISCLOSED, AS ARE TECHNIQUES FOR ADDRESSING FILTER STATE VECTORS AS INITIAL CONDITIONS AS THE CORRECTIVE FILTERS ARE REPEATEDLY ENGAGED DURING SUCCESSIVE SETTLE-OUT AND TRACK FOLLOW CYCLES (BETWEEN SEEKS), AS ARE CONTINUOUS ADAPTATION TECHNIQUES FOR CHANGING VIBRATION ENVIRONMENTS.FIGURE 7B

Abstract: In an idle state, servo information from all sectors is not used, but the servo information from every other sector or from every three or more sectors is used so that head positioning can be performed with only a minimum amount of servo information. The power to the electric circuitry of a write or read system and a servo system, which is not needed in the idle state, is interrupted, from the arrival of the selected servo information to the arrival of the next selected servo information, by a power control signal generated in accordance with the timing of the sectors. The power consumption can be reduced by the amount corresponding to turning off the circuitry not needed, plus the amount needed for computing for position control.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk drive device, a loading/unloading device and its control method wherein data reliability is increased by performing stable speed control. SOLUTION: A disk drive device 10 is provided with a VCM spindle driver 12 for rotary-driving a disk 11, an actuator mechanism 14 for moving a head slider having a magnetic head 13 above the surface of a magnet disk 11 and to a retreating position, a lamp block 15 and a CPU/HDC 16 for controlling operations including loading/unloading control, control for the speed of the actuator or data reading/writing in the disk 11. Before performing speed control for loading the actuator on a recording medium, a proper rectangular current wave is first applied so as to release the actuator from its static state by an open loop, then the movement of the actuator caused by the application of the rectangular current wave is immediately measured, whether a proper initial speed is obtained or not is determined and, when a proper initial speed is not obtained, a rectangular current wave is applied again and then the initial condition of speed control is decided based on the measuring result.
