Abstract:
A head support assembly for a disk drive is comprised of a head suspension assembly connected to an actuator arm at one end and supporting a head at the other end, wherein a projection is formed on a flexure closely fixed on a thin-plate load beam, said projection projecting toward a disk surface and having a smooth surface. The projection is formed at a region somewhat close to the head supporting end from the hinge portion of the load beam. When shock is applied to the disk drive, bending occurs around the hinge portion of the load beam. During such bending, the projection having a smooth round surface is caused to contact the disk, whereby the disk surface is prevented from being damaged.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate an error due to thermal asperity by detecting a read defect on a data recording surface, varying the rotating speed of a disk and making a signal transducer which has decreased in flotation quantity collide, and breaking a projection as the thermal asperity. SOLUTION: Once the signal transducer 20 equipped with an air bearing surface(ABS) 44 and a magneto-resistive(MR) element 42 detects the projection 52 as the thermal asperity of the magnetic disk 18, the rotating speed of the disk is reduced. The ABS 44 of the signal transducer 20 which has decreased in flotation quantity by the speed reduction collides against the projection 52, which is broken, thereby eliminating the read error due to the thermal asperity.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a disk drive apparatus which detects when a signal transducer head contacts a projection, forming a thermal asperity on the recording surfaces of disks, makes the flying height of the signal transducer head lower by changing the rotation speed from the normal rotation speed in read/write operations or by transforming a suspension having a bimetal structure while said signal transducer head is positioned over the detected projection on the track, and makes the signal transducer head strike against the projection to break the projection.

A head support assembly for a disk drive is a head suspension assembly connected to an actuator arm at one end and supporting a head at the other end, wherein a projection (47) is formed on a flexure (14) closely fixed on a thin-plate load beam (12), the projection projecting toward a disk surface and having a smooth surface. The projection is formed at a region somewhat close to the head supporting end from the hinge portion of the load beam. When shock is applied to the disk drive, bending occurs around the hinge portion (45) of the load beam. During such bending, the projection having a smooth round surface is caused to contact the disk, whereby the disk surface is prevented from being damaged.
