Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for transporting control information in a communications system. The apparatus comprises a network processor, a control point processor operatively coupled to the network processor, and a guided frame generated by the control point processor. The guided frame comprises a first section in which frame control information is placed and is used by the network processor to update at least one control register within the network processor; a second section carrying correlators assigned by the control point processor to correlate guided frame responses with their requests; a third section carrying one or a sequence of guided commands; and an End delimiter guided command.

Abstract: Described is an improved method and apparatus which allows graceful insertion/de-insertion of a station into an FDDI network. A circuit arrangement known as "Roving MAC" captures a local token which is circulating on a local loop established between the Roving MAC and the station. The "Roving MAC" issues void frames while holding the local token. A circuit arrangement monitors the FDDI network. If the token on the FDDI network is sensed before the local token is released, a data frame is allowed to pass through, but the token concatenated to the data frame is switched into the device thus joining it to the FDDI network. A scrubber circuit simultaneously removes the void frames and issues idle signals on the FDDI network.
