PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium for detection of the target microbes in a liquified environmental or biological sample in less than 24 hours. SOLUTION: The target microbe-specific medium operable to allow viability and reproduction of the target microbe are obtained by comprising an effective amount of vitamin, amino acid, minor elements and salt ingredients. And the invention relates to use of sodium pyruvate to assist recovery of metabolically injured bacteria, use of thermal equilibrium period, use of a small amount of sodium chloride, offers a proper amount of other metabolite and a compound generating a specific detectable signal. The invention features a medium for the detection of the presence or absence of a target microbe in a liquified environmental or biological sample comprising: a) an effective amount of a vitamin, an amino acid, an element and a salt ingredients operable to allow viability and reproduction of the tai.get microbe at a rate such that any detectable change in the sample is observable within 18 hours for a sample with less than 10 target microbes per 100 ml; and b) an effective amount of one or more nutrient-indicators provided in an amount sufficient to produce a detectable characteristic signal in the medium during growth of the target microbe; and the nutrient-indicator being operable to alter a detectable characteristic of the sample if metabolized by the target microbe so as to confirm the presence or absence of the target microbe in the sample.
