Abstract: A device detects a tag for a carrier medium so as to make a detection tag (DT) available. A communications device fetches a public code for an encryption algorithm from a code store via a message channel. Devices detect an encoded version of the tag, decode it with the public code so as to make a reference tag (RT) available and compare the RT with the DT. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) A method for checking the allocation of a memory to a carrier medium; (B) and for a computer program with program code for carrying out the method of the present invention.

Abstract: A cellular phone employs its built in digital camera to scan a badge of a product e.g. a pair of trousers. A processor in the cellular phone then compresses the digitized image of the badge. An encrypted key of the badge of the pair of trousers is then read out by a challenge sequence sent out by the cellular phone. The cellular phone retrieves the official key from the manufacturer's database via a cellular phone connection and decrypts the read out badge data with the aid of the retrieved official key. The decrypted badge is then compared with the compressed data of the scanned image and a decision is made if the two data sets match. This process can be transferred in other areas e.g. staff identification cards, spare parts for vehicles, Integrated circuits etc.
