The (B) ingredients improve the anchoring property of the alkyl ammonium compound (A) which is the active ingredient of a wood preservative, whereby there is obtained a wood preservative with long-lasting preservation effect under the conditions of underground burial or under water installation.

[Also in Division C5] Compounds of the general formula where R is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical of 12-18 C atoms, M is H or an alkali metal and X is H or CH 2 COOM are prepared by reacting a diethanolalkylamine, having a C 12-18 saturated or unsaturated alkyl radical, with monochloroacetic acid or its alkali metal salt (a) after substituting the active hydrogen of the diethanolalkylamine with an alkali metal or (b) in the presence of an alkali in an amount sufficient to neutralize the HCl formed, and under substantially anhydrous conditions. The alkali metal is preferably Na or K and the reaction is advantageously performed at 80-100‹ C. using a mole ratio of the amine to monochloroacetic acid of 1:1.5 to 1: 2À5. In the examples mixtures of sodium N- lauryl - N - hydroxyethyl - # - aminoethoxy acetate and N-lauryl-#-imino-bis-(sodium ethoxyacetate), and the corresponding stearyl compounds are obtained.
