Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound useful for producing a composition excellent in waving effects and persistence, low damaging properties to damaged hair, blending and low odor properties and safety when used as a reducing agent for a permanent waving composition. SOLUTION: This polyalkylene glycol monothiolactate of formula I [R is ethylene or propylene; (n) is an integer of 2-4], e.g. diethylene glycol monothiolactate. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting 1mol equiv. thiolactic acid or alkyl thiolactate of formula II (R is H or a 1-4C alkyl) with preferably 1.5-3mol equiv. polyalkylene glycol of formula III at 80-180 deg.C. Water produced at this time is preferably removed. Furthermore, the compound of formula I as a reducing agent in a blended amount of 5-30% is mixed in an aqueous medium and the pH is preferably regulated to 6.5-8 to afford an excellent permanent waving composition.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain permanent wave composition excellent in hair waving effect, hair wave sustainability, low-damaging effect on the already injured hair, formulability, low odoriferousness and safety. CONSTITUTION: An aqueous medium is first formulated with 3-50wt.% of a polyalkylene glycol monothioglycolate of the formula (R is ethylene or propylene; (n) is 2-4) (e.g. diethylene glycol monothioglycolate) as reducing agent fol.lowed by 0.1-10wt.% of a known reducing agent (e.g. thioglycolic acid) and 0.5-30wt.% of an infiltration promoter (e.g. ethanol) and then, according as appropriate, other conventional ingredients, thus preparing the objective composition with pH3-11. When this composition is to be used as a 1st agent for permanent wave, the hair is first treated with this composition followed by using, as a 2nd agent, an oxidizing agent solution prepared by formulating an aqueous medium with 0.5-20wt.% of a conventional oxidizing agent to set the hair design. This composition can also be used as a one-formula type setting agent in the form of hair straightening agent and also through making the concentration of the reducing agents lower, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject ester excellent in waving function and the durability of waves, causing little deteriorating effect on damaged hair, and having low degree smell, and excellent compatibility and safety when used as a reducing agent for a permanent-wave treatment composition consisting of a mixture of specific isomers. CONSTITUTION: A mixture of isomers consisting of 3- hydroxybutylmonothioglycolate of formula I and 3-hydroxy-l- methylpropylmonothioglycolate of formula II. The mixture is obtained e.g. by reacting a thioglycolic acid or a thioglycolic acid alkyl ester of formula III (R is H or a 1-4C alkyl) with 1,3-butanediol of formula IV. The reaction is preferably carried out by using a compound of formula IV in an amount of 1.5-3 equivalents based on a compound of formula III at 80-180 deg.C while the generated water is being removed. Further, a compounding ratio of the mixture to a permanent-wave treatment composition is preferably 5-5-wt.%.
