    Abstract: 1281092 Adhesive for laminates KAO SOAP CO Ltd 8 July 1969 34413/69 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] An aqueous adhesive composition, particularly suitable for sticking mosaic tiles to kraft paper in that it exhibits a great difference in adhesive properties in the dry and wet states, comprises a water-insoluble, high molecular weight vinyl polymer selected from polyvinyl acetate, a partial saponification product thereof, partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol, a graft copolymer of vinyl acetate with polyvinyl alcohol, a copolymer of vinyl acetate with a copolymerizable monomer, or a polyvinyl acetal, dissolved in a concentrated aqueous solution of an anionic surfactant, the weight ratio of surfactant to polymer lying in the range 10 : 100 to 100 : 10. The vinyl acetate may be copolymerized with vinyl pyrrolidone, maleic anhydride, ethyl acrylate or vinyl laurate and the polyvinyl acetals may be polyvinyl fermal, acetal or butyral. The anionic surfactant is exemplified by sodium resinate, oleate, dodecyl sulphate, dodecyl sulphonate, dodecyl benzene sulphonate and butylnaphthalenesulphonate. The composition is prepared by admixing the polymer in the form of granules or an emulsion with a concentrated aqueous solution of the surfactant of at least 8 wt. per cent in water. Examples 1 and 2 are directed to bonding tiles to paper with the aid of the compositions for testing purposes. Examples 3 to 5 disclose bonding with the compositions of the invention acetate sliding-door paper on to cedar board, kraft paper on to polished steel plate or a commercially available decorative board comprising a phenolic resin core layer and a melamine resin surface. Example 6 discloses a composition comprising a 20% aqueous solution of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and ethyl acrylate (originally containing a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic anhydride as a protective colloid) in aqueous sodium resinate (weight ratio of polymer to surfactant 6 :14).
