Abstract: PURPOSE:To simply and inexpensively prepare the subject high quality compound or an aqueous solution thereof by flowing a reaction product prepared by directly reacting a saccharide with a higher alcohol, etc., or an aqueous solution of the reaction product in a thin filmy state and subsequently bringing the thin-filmy reaction solution into contact with steam, etc., at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:A saccharide such as glucose, maltose or inulin is directly reacted with a higher alcohol of the formula (R is 6-22C alkyl, etc.; A is 2-4C alkylene; n is on the average 0-5), or the saccharide is reacted with a lower alcohol and subsequently with the higher alcohol. The unreacted alcohol contained in the reaction product used for the preparation of an alkylglycoside or an aqueous solution is reduced to 3-10wt.%.
