    Abstract: An absorbent article which is composed of a liquid-permeable surface material (2), a non-liquid-permeable backing material (4), and an absorbent material (3) interposed between the surface material (2) and the backing material (4), is vertically elongate, and is divided into an abdomen side (A) to be in contact with the abdomen of the wearer and a back side (B) to be in contact with the back of the wearer, the back side (B) being provided with pieces (6) for fastening the absorbent article at both the edges thereof, wherein the backing material (4) is one made of a sheet-like material comprising a laminate of a microporous resin film (4a) and a nonwoven fabric (4b) and each fastening piece (6) is one made of a male sheet of a mechanical hook and is directly abutted against the nonwoven fabric (4b) of the backing material (4) for effecting the fastening. This article fits the wearer's body so well that it can well prevent leakage, does not cause the feeling of wetness in wearing, and has an excellent hand.

    Abstract: A liquid permeable nonwoven fabric having concealing properties and suitable for use as the topsheet of an absorbent article for personal wear comprises short fibers, 50% by weight or more being thermoplastic fibers, and has sealed areas (2) formed by partially sealing the fabric (1) so that the sealed area ratio is from 10 to 40%, the short fibers containing, based on 100 parts by weight of the fibers, from 1 to 5 parts by weight of titanium oxide, an aggregate web of the fibres having a wettability of from 3 to 20 seconds as expressed in terms of sedimentation time, and the fabric having a reflectance per unit basis weight of 1.3% or more. The sealing may be done by ultrasonic or heat embossing, eg with rolls and may be preceded by a hot air treatment. Bicomponent fibres are suitable.
