Provided is an internal olefin sulfonate composition which is capable of exerting good foamability together with good volume of foam, foaming speed, foam dissipation property, foam quality, foam durability in the presence of sebum, and volume of foam in the presence of sebum at high levels, and a cleansing composition containing the same. The internal olefin sulfonate composition of the present invention comprises (A) an internal olefin sulfonate having 16 carbon atoms and (B) an internal olefin sulfonate having 18 carbon atoms, wherein a mass content ratio (A/B) of component (A) to component (B) is from 75/25 to 90/10, and wherein a mass ratio (hydroxy form/olefin form) of a content of a hydroxy form in the internal olefin sulfonate of the component (A) and the component (B) to a content of an olefin form in the internal olefin sulfonate of the component (A) and the component (B) is from 75/25 to 100/0.

The present invention provides a surfactant composition for emulsion polymerization of which stability upon polymerization and mechanical stability of emulsion are good, in which particle has a small size, and of which viscosity may be made to low. The surfactant composition for emulsion polymerization comprises a compound (a) represented by the formula (I) and having a critical micelle concentration (CMC) in the range of from not less than 0.007 mol L to not more than 0.1 mol L and a compound (b) represented by the formula (II) and having a CMC in the range of from not less than 1 x 10 mol L to less than 0.007 mol L , as essential components, and the molar ratio of the components (a) to (b) in terms of (a)/(b) is from 5/95 to 75/25: R O-(A O)m-SO3M R O-(A O)n-SO3M (in the formulae, R and R are monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon groups; A and A are alkylene groups having 2 to 4 carbons; m and n are numbers from 1 to 50; and M and M are monovalent cations).

Preparation of an unsaturated alcohol (I) involves hydrogenating an alkyl or alkenyl ester of an unsaturated fatty acid or a triglyceride with a long-chain, aliphatic, unsaturated hydrocarbon group in the presence of a catalyst comprising a complex metal oxide containing (a) zinc oxide and (b) oxide(s) of group IIIA metal(s), with an (a)/(b) weight ratio of 1/(0.01-1.2). The Group IIIA element is yttrium, lanthanum, cerium or thorium. Reaction is carried out at 150-350 deg C.
