Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce fine lamellar hematite powder having uniform particle diameters, by heating an aqueous slurry composition which comprises a ferric salt, tartaric acid or its salt and an alkali compound and has a composition to satisfy a specific pH condition, at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Aqueous slurry comprising a ferric salt such as FeCl3, etc., tartaric acid and/or its salt and a third component of an alkali compound such as NaOH, etc., is processed into a composition to satisfy a condition shown by formulas pH>=8.2 and (pH-6.6)/600 =120 deg.C and treated for about 10hr. By this treatment, lamellar hematite powder consisting of lamellar particles having an ogive wherein particle diameter of median is 0.01-1mum, particle diameter ratio of first quartile point to third quartile point is 0.67-1.50, particle diameter ratio of 1/10 point to 9/10 point is 0.-2.0 and lamellar ratio is >=2 is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain magnetic powder excellent in an oxidation-proofness, by using oxide powder obtained by reacting iron oxide or oxide powder, whose main component is iron oxide, with an aqueous solution, in which transition metal salt, or transition metal slat, and ferrous salt, and alkali are contained, under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:Iron oxide powder or oxide powder whose main component is iron oxide is reacted with an aqueous solution in which transition metal salt and ferrous salt and alkali are contained. In this process, this aqueous solution is reacted for 2-15 hours at 70 deg.C or less under a non-oxygenous atmosphere and then the temperature in this system is raised to 80-100 deg.C and preferably this reaction is continued for 5-20 hours. On the surface obtained in this way, oxide or iron oxide having a compound layer containing transition metal is heated and reduced so that magnetic powder excellent in an oxidation- proofness can be obtained. As the iron oxide, gamma-Fe2O3 and alpha-Fe2O3 and the like are used. Salt without halogen is available for the transition metal salt. Cobalt, nickel, and chrome are suitable as the transition metal.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent particles in a production stage from being sintered to each other and to obtain a ferromagnetic metal powder whose specific surface area is large and whose coercive force is high by a method wherein needle- shaped goethite which is subjected to a shape maintenance treatment is dehydrated and made voidless under a reducing atmosphere, it is transformed into magnetite, this is again subjected to the shape maintenance treatment and is reduced and a metal magnetic powder is obtained. CONSTITUTION:For example, goethite is dispersed in a solution; an Si compound and/or an Al compound are added; this mixture is stirred; after that, dilute nitric acid is added; a pH of this system is adjusted; the mixture is filtered, cleaned and dried; the goethite with a silicon compound layer is obtained. This goethite is reduced in a retort furnace while a mixed gas of hydrogen/nitrogen is flowing; magnetite is obtained. This magnetite is dispersed again in a solution; an Si compound and/or a phenolic resin are added and dispersed; after that, dilute nitric acid is added; a pH of this system is adjusted; this mixture is filtered, cleaned and dried; magnetite on which a silicon compound layer is formed newly is obtained. This magnetic is reduced in the retort furnace in a gas blow of hydrogen; a metal powder is obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain ferromagnetic metal powder having good nonoxidizable stability and to enable high output and high density recording of a medium, by providing an aluminum compound layer and a nonferrous transition metal element compound layer on the surfaces of ferromagnetic metal particles. CONSTITUTION:Aluminum compound is so provided on the surfaces of ferromagnetic metal particles containing as a main ingredient iron that the quantity of the aluminum becomes 0.1-1wt.% to the ion, and a layer containing nonferrous transition metal element compound is further provided thereon. Further, after an aluminum compound film is formed on the surfaces of iron oxide or oxide particles containing as a main ingredient the iron oxide, it is treated in an aqueous solution containing salt of nonferrous transition metal element or ferrous salt and salt of nonferrous transition metal element and alkali, and a film containing the nonferrous transition metal element compound is formed on the aluminum compound film. Then, it is reduced without disordering their laminating order.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve coercive force and oxidation resistance by controlling temperatures at specified values in the initial stage and the intermediaet stage of reduction, and performing reduction reaction in the initial stage of the reduction by using a mixture of hydrogen gas and inactive gas. CONSTITUTION:The temperature of the initial stage of reduction is made to be 370 deg.C or less. The temperature in the intermediate stage of the reduction is made to be 330-500 deg.C. In the initial stage of the reduction, the mixture of hydrogen gas and inactive gas is used. The initial stage of the reduction is a coexisting period of mainly Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 in the initial period of the reduction. This is the reduction step until the weight is reduced at least 1% and the maximum of 5% from the initial weight. The intermediate stage of the reduction is the reduction step from the end of the initial stage of the reduction to the final point, where the including amount of metal indicates at least 1% and the maximum of 5%. As the inactive gas to be used, nitrogen, argon, helium and the like are listed. lt is desirable that the mixing ratio of the hydrogen and the inactive gas in the initial stage of the reduction is in the range of hydrogen/inactive gas = 10/1-/100.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make a resistance to oxidation better and to enhance both a coercive force and a saturation magnetization, by forming a layer in which a transition metal is contained in oxide powder on the surfaces of oxide particles which are the precursor of ferromagnetic metal powder and in which the basic constituent consists of iron oxide, under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:A layer, which has a silicon compound layer containing 0.2-1.0wt.% silicon to the amount of iron in ferromagnetic metal powder and includes a non-ferrous transition metal compound on the silicon compound layer, is formed on the surfaces of ferromagnetic metal particles in which the basic constituent consists of iron. That is, after a silicon compound film is formed on the surfaces of oxide particles in which the basic constituent consists of iron oxide, a film which contains a non-ferrous transition metal is formed on the silicon compound film by employing an alkali and either a non-ferrous transition metal salt or a ferrous salt and the non-ferrous transition metal salt. Subsequently, reduction is performed without this laminating order being put into disorder.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain cubic plate magnetic powder having a uniform particle diameter ratio, by incorporating a ferric salt with tartaric acid and an alkali compound at a specific molar ratio, heat-treating the resultant aqueous slurry and reducing the resultant plate hematite in a hydrogen gas stream. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous slurry, consisting of three components of a ferric salt, tartaric acid (salt) and an alkali compound at >=8.2pH and satisfying conditions expressed by the formula is prepared. In the formula, r is the molar ratio of the tartaric acid (salt) to iron ions. The resultant slurry is then heated to >=120 deg.C to give plate hematite, which is further reduced in a hydrogen gas steam and, as desired, reoxidized and treated with a cobalt salt. The magnetic powder obtained by the method has 0.01-1mum particle diameter of the median value, 0.67-1.50 particle diameter ratio at the first quartile point and the third quartile point and 0.5-2.0 particle diameter ratio at the 1/10 fraction point to 9/10 fraction point in a cumulative distribution curve of plate surface area. The plate form ratio is >=2, and the powder has improved magnetic characteristics as a magnetic recording medium.
