    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an excellent humectant which is composed of a specific carboxyl betaine having high moisture retention, and can sustain the excellent effects for a long time, when used in cosmetics and detergents. CONSTITUTION:This humectant comprises a carboxyl betaine of formula 1 [Z is a residue after nXOH groups are removed from glycerol or glycerol condensate, HO-A (A is 2-5C alkylene); R , R are 1-5C alkyl; Y is alkylene which may bear OH; (n) is 1 or more and does not exceed the number of OH in the glycerol or glycerol condensate where in the case of Z=H)-A, (n) is 1]. As for the carboxyl betaine of formula I, compounds of formula 4 (p) is 2 to 5; (q) is 1, 2), formula 5 and 6 are cited and the compound of formula 4 where p=2 and q=1 is particularly preferred. The carboxyl betaine of formula 1 is prepared, for example, by reaction of a compound of formula 2 with a compound of formula 3 (X is halogen; M is cation).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a skin cosmetic capable of persistently feeding moisture to stratum corneum by including an acrylic acid-based polymer, a polysaccharide excluding mucopolysaccharides and water. SOLUTION: This skin cosmetic comprises (A) an acrylic acid-based polymer (e.g. carboxyvinyl polymer), (B) polysaccharide excluding mucopolysaccharides (e.g. carrageenan, especially preferably κ-carrageenan) and (C) water. It is preferable that components A and B are contained in total amount of components A and B of preferably 0.05-6 wt.%, especially preferably 0.1-5 wt.%, further preferably 0.2-4 wt.% and the component C is contained in an amount of preferably >=40 wt.%, especially preferably about 50-95 wt.% based on total composition. The compounding weight ratio of the components A to B is preferably (20:1) to (1:2), especially (10:1) to (1:1.5).
