SOLUTION: This glycerol-α-polyoxyalkylene glycerol monofatty acid ester of formula I [R is a 1-23C aliphatic hydrocarbon group; A is a 2-4C alkylene; (n) is 1-100] is obtained by addition-reacting an alkylene oxide to a glycerol ketal or acetal of formula II (R , R are each H, a 1-22C alkyl, a 2-22C alkenyl, a 6-30C aryl) in the presence of a catalyst and subsequently hydrolyzing the reaction product. The catalyst comprises the first component comprising an alkali (ne earth) metal compound selected form the hydroxides, oxides, organic acid salts and alcoholates of alkali (ne earth) metals, the second component comprising silica or a silica compound or a metal oxide except the metal oxides of the first component, or the combination of the first and second components. The compound of formula I is useful as a surfactant good in water solubility and foamability.
