Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high-concentration anionic surfactant composition containing at least one kind of a sulfate of an alkylene oxide adduct of a higher alcohol, and a salt of an alkylene ether glycol sulfate acting as a fluidizing agent thereof in good productivity while reducing production load without changing a conventional installation for producing the sulfate of the alkylene oxide adduct. SOLUTION: The method for producing the anionic surfactant composition comprises bringing a 2-4C alkylene oxide into contact with water and/or an alkylene glycol in the presence of a catalyst to afford a mixture comprising a compound represented by formula (3): RO(AO) m H and a compound represented by formula (4): HO(AO) n H, sulfating the compounds, and neutralizing the sulfated products to afford the surfactant composition containing a compound represented by formula (5): RO(AO) m SO 3 M 1 and a compound represented by formula (6): ZO(AO) n SO 3 M 2 . Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and simply and efficiently produce the subject compound by bringing a compound in which specific hydroxyl groups of a polyhydric alcohol are protected with a ketal or an acetal into contact with steam and carrying out the deprotection of the compound in the presence of an acidic catalyst. SOLUTION: A compound having a structure in which two hydroxyl groups of a polyhydric alcohol represented by formula I [R and R are each H, a 1-22C alkyl or the like; X is R O (R is H, a 1-23C aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a 1-22C aliphatic acyl or the like) or a halogen; A is a 2-4C alkylene; (n) is 0-100] or its derivative are protected with a ketal or an acetal is brought into contact with steam in the presence of an acidic catalyst (e.g. an inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid or an organic acid such as p- toluenesulfonic acid) and deprotected (deketalized or deacetalized) to produce the objective compound represented by formula II. The deprotection is carried out at 10-120 deg.C under atmospheric pressure or 0.13-66.6 kPa by adding the acidic catalyst in an amount of 0.0001-0.5 wt.% based on the compound represented by formula I thereto while blowing the steam into the compound.
