The present invention relates to a safety arrangement of an elevator, which comprises a mechanical safety device (3, 4, 11) that ensures the safety of the elevator hoistway (2) and can be moved into a use position, and which safety arrangement of an elevator comprises a detector (5) of intrusion into the elevator hoistway, which detector is fitted to receive measuring data (6) from the sensors (7) that measure the status of the entrances (9, 10) of the elevator hoistway, and also to determine intrusion into the elevator hoistway (2) from the measuring data received, and after determining an intrusion to switch the safety arrangement of the elevator into an operating mode (8) in which driving with the elevator is prevented. The aforementioned detector (5) of intrusion into the elevator hoistway is fitted to determine on the basis of the measuring data (6) received the area of intrusion (9, 10) from where intrusion into the elevator hoistway (2) has occurred, the safety arrangement comprising a service drive unit and the detector of intrusion into the elevator hoistway is fitted to delimit a safe area (27, 28) of the elevator hoistway corresponding to the determined area of intrusion (9, 10), and the safety arrangement of the elevator is fitted to permit service drive after the mechanical safety device (3, 4, 11) that is disposed in the safe area (27, 28) delimited by the detector (5) of intrusion into the elevator hoistway and that ensures the safety of the elevator hoistway is moved into the use position, and that the service drive unit is disposed in the pit of the elevator hoistway.

According to one aspect, there is provided an apparatus for operating an elevator car (102) of an elevator system, the elevator car (102) being driven by a belt (112). The apparatus comprises a wheel (120) configured to be connected to the belt (112) or to a diverting pulley (114) of the elevator system acting on the belt (112), and a mechanical interface (124) configured to provide a rotational motion to the wheel (120) to move the elevator car (102).

The elevator system includes an elevator hoistway bounded by a surrounding structure, two or more entrances to the elevator hoistway, guide rails, which are fitted into the elevator hoistway and also an elevator car with door(s), which elevator car is configured to be movable in the elevator hoistway between the aforementioned entrances to the elevator hoistway along a vertical trajectory determined by the guide rails. Each entrance to the elevator hoistway may be bounded by a door frame, onto which a hoistway door is fitted. The door opening of the elevator car may be bounded by a door frame, onto which the car door is fitted. The elevator system includes for each entrance to the elevator hoistway a marking piece fixed immovably to the frame of the hoistway door, wherein the marking piece indicates the location in the elevator hoistway of the entrance to the elevator hoistway. The elevator system may also include a reader moving along with the elevator car, wherein the reader may be fixed immovably to a fixing point on the frame of the car door and may be configured to read the marking piece.

Abstract The invention is about a rope pulley (2) of an elevator system, which is a free rotating pulley (2) around which a hoisting rope of the elevator system can be guided. Said free pulley is to be mounted to a car sling (1) of an elevator car, wherein the pulley (2) comprises an encoder for measuring the rotation movement of the pulley. The movement data are transmitted to a controller that converts the movement data into position data of the car in the hoistway, while further position data are gathered from identification markers that are installed in the hoistway. At least, the movement data of the rope pulley(s) are calibrated based on the position data from the identification markers. By means of that, the position of the car in the hoistway can be determined accurately and costly. Fig. 1
