Abstract:
The present invention provides a number of interrelated methods for the production of random and ordered arrays of particles and recesses, as well as films containing such arrays and recesses. The present invention also relates to the random and ordered arrays of particles and films prepared therefrom. The ordered arrays are obtained by the use of ferrofluid compositions which may be curable, solidifiable or non-curing/non-solidifiable. The arrays and films may contain electrically-conductive particles useful in electronic applications for effecting contact between leads or pads.
Abstract:
A curable thiol-ene composition specially adapted for use as a primary coating on optical fibers comprises a polythiol and a compound having a plurality of norbornene groups thereon, are characterized in that one of either the compound having the plurality of norbornene groups or the polythiol has a backbone of a poly(tetramethylene oxide), or is an oligomer thereof, and the poly(tetramethylene oxide) has a molecular weight of between 250 and 5,000. The formulations are relatively low viscosity liquids at practical application temperatures and cure substantially completely with very low irradiation fluence. The formulations cure in ambient air. There is no need to exclude oxygen or to control humidity. The formulations of the invention can be cured using low intensity UV lamps which do not generate significant amounts of heat. The cured products have excellent low temperature flexibility, good humidity and water absorbtion resistance and good thermal oxidative stability. The formulations may be applied to optical fibers using conventional techniques and cured with UV-vis or EB irradiation.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a dispensing process particularly for a sealing/adhesive product (14) which comprises at least one step of pumping the sealing/adhesive product to allow a step of distribution thereof onto at least one part to be sealed, such as for example a motor-vehicle mechanical component (5), an intermediate step of deaeration of the sealing/adhesive product, so as to optimize its distribution on the part to be sealed, is provided between the pumping step and the distribution step. The apparatus for dispensing the sealing/adhesive product (14) comprises elements (2) for feeding the sealing/adhesive product to elements (4) for distributing it onto at least one part (5) to be sealed and sealing/adhesive product deaeration means (3) which cooperate with the pumping and distribution elements for the uniform deposition of the sealant/adhesive on the part.
Abstract:
Polymerizable compositions comprising a liquid polymerizable continuous phase and a non-liquid, non-polymerizable dispersed discontinuous phase are stabilized agents density drift of the discontinuous phase by forming in-situ, throughout and within said polymerizable composition a crystalline matrix of sufficient density to effectively inhibit density drift.
Abstract:
A photocurable composition comprises (a) a (meth)acrylate functional monomer or prepolymer; (b) a cationically curable monomer or prepolymer; (c) a free-radical liberating, carbonyl containing, photoinitiator; and (d) an aromatic halonium salt whose anion is a complex metal halide. The composition solves difficulties in curing found in previous formulations and provides complete curing in air, thereby preventing tacky surfaces, as well as an accelerated cure rate and a more penetrating cure depth. Blending with between about 10% and 20% of a carboxyl-terminated nitrile rubber results in a composition suitable for bonding polybutyleneterephthalate.
Abstract:
Cationically cureable adhesives and sealants with increased viscosities and improved rheological control and good storage stability are prepared using a cationically cureable monomer and a thickening polymer which is the alkylation reaction product of poly(4-hydroxystyrene) or poly(2-hydroxystyrene) with a compound RX where R is allyl, methallyl, crotyl or prenyl and X is Cl, Br or I. The cationically cureable monomer suitably includes at least one alkenyloxystyrene monomer. Such thickened adhesives are useful as edge sealants for flat panel display devices. A-stage curing of the adhesive with UV irradiation allows for near ambient temperature fixturing of the device assemblies and B-stage thermal curing of the adhesive can be conducted at much lower temperatures than are needed for glass frit sealants. The B-stage cured products have thermal resistance, outgassing and substrate adhesion properties adequate for flat panel display devices.
Abstract:
A package (10), with a nozzle (25), a chamber (35), a cap (15) which fits over the nozzle, and a pin (40) attached to the interior of the cap which fits into the opening (24) of the nozzle, for storing and dispensing a liquid, having an improved closure mechanism comprising at least one rectangular stopping member (55, 56) and at least one rectangular band (58) in the interior of the cap and at least one guide flange (29) on the nozzle. The package also has a plurality of guide ribs (26) located around the nozzle to aid in the proper placement of the cap. The package is designed to be leak proof, nonclogging, able to dispense the liquid precisely, and can be easily opened even when the pin has bonded to the opening of the nozzle without breaking or shearing the pin.
Abstract:
A process for treating waste washing water, which is only slightly affected by the temperature and can dispense with any chemical and wherein the quality of treated water is not affected by a change in the waste water concentration. The process comprises conducting impregnation with an impregnant having a composition comprising triethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate, nonionic surfactant and azobisisobutyronitrile, separating the impregnant thereafter, washing the surface of an impregnated article with water, and treating the waste water with a liquid obtained by filtering the liquid having the above composition though a filter having a retained particle diameter of 20 mu m or less.
Abstract:
Compounds useful as adhesion promoters for thermally cured thiolene adhesives include (a) acrylic or norbornene acid phosphate esters such as (I) and (II); b) maleic, acrylic, methacrylic, norbornene dicarboxylic, and fumaric acids and half acid esters and peresters of maleic fumaric and norbornene dicarboxylic acids; and c) norbornene, acrylic or methacrylic silanes having two or three hydrolyzable groups bound to the silicon atom thereof, such as 5-(triacetoxysilyl)norbornene. The adhesion promoters may be employed as surface primers for conventional thiolene compositions. Alternatively the thiolene compositions themselves may be modified by addition of 0.1 to 10 % by weight of the adhesion promoter. Preferred thiolene compositions employ norbornene functional ene ingredients.
