Abstract:
The invention provides a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an esterified polymer. The invention further provides for the use of the esterified polymer as a viscosity modifier or dispersant viscosity modifier. The invention further provides a method for lubricating a mechanical device using the lubricating composition. The esterified polymer has at least 60mol% of ester groups having an even number of carbon atoms, i.e. 8,10,12,14,16,18 or 20 carbon atoms.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity; an esterified copolymer with a backbone comprising units derived from (i) an alpha-olefm monomer of at least about 6 carbon atoms and (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in a mole ratio of 1 :3 to 3: 1; and a polymer comprising olefin monomer units of 3 to 5 carbon atoms, wherein at least 50 percent by weight of such units contain fewer than 6 carbon atoms and wherein less than 5 percent by weight of such units are ethylene monomer units; exhibits good power transfer efficiency and elastohydrodynamic film thickness.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a polymeric phosphorus ester comprising the condensation product of a monomeric phospho¬ rus acid or an ester thereof with a diol having two hydroxy groups separated by a chain of 4 to about 100 atoms exhibits good volatility, corrosion, wear, and/or seal performance in lubrication of a transmission.
Abstract:
A process is provided for preparing a salt of a hydroxy-substituted ester of phosphoric acid, comprising: (a) reacting a phosphate diester with an alkylene oxide, (b) reacting the product mixture of step (a) with a phosphating agent; and (c) reacting the product mixture of step (b) with an amine; wherein the phosphate diester is reacted with the alkylene oxide of step (a) in the substantial absence of a phosphate monoester. The product is useful as an antiwear agent.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity, an ashless condensation reaction product of an olefin polymer, having a number average molecular weight of 2,000 to 70,000, comprising carboxylic acid or equivalent functionality grafted onto the polymer backbone, with a monoamine or a polyamine often having a single primary amino group; a succinimide dispersant; and an overbased metal detergent, in an amount such that the total base number of the lubricant composition is less than 6.5, exhibits good sludge prevention performance in a gasoline engine.

Abstract:
A process is provided for preparing a salt of a hydroxy-substituted di- ester of phosphoric acid, comprising: (a) reacting a phosphating agent with a monohydric alcohol and with an alkylene polyol, wherein the mole ratio of monohydric alcohol : alkylene polyol is about 0.2:0.8 to about 0.8:0.2 and wherein an excess of the phosphating agent is employed such that the product mixture formed thereby contains phosphorus acid functionality; and (b) reacting the product mixture of step (a) with an amine. The product is useful as an antiwear agent.
Abstract:
Lubricating compositions containing a phosphorus-containing salt of an acylated ethylene-a-olefin polymer substituted with an aliphatic polyamine having at least one primary or secondary amine, the lubricating composition having a total phosphorus content in an amount of 200 ppm to 600 ppm by weight of the lubricating composition. The phosphorus-containing salt additive described herein can be used as an anti-wear agent in lubricating composition for diesel engines.
