The invention relates to lubricating compositions, processes of making such lubricating compositions, and method of using such lubricating compositions. The lubricating compositions of the present invention include a dispersant comprising a quaternary ammonium salt, a phosphorus-containing compound, a metal dialkyldithiophosphate, a derivative of a hydroxyl carbonyl compound and an amine and/or an alcohol. These compositions provide balanced deposit control and wear performance without causing any seal compatibility issues.

The invention is directed to a zinc-free lubricating composition for an internal combustion engine containing a phosphorus anti-wear agent, an ashless antioxidant, and a metal-free basic detergent. The lubricating composition provides wear protection, deposit control, and improved acid control with reduced levels of metal -containing additives.

In accordance with the present invention, it has been discovered that an additive which is substantially insoluble in, has low solubility in and/or is otherwise incompatible with a functional fluid, may be supplied to the functional fluid by use of a gel composition and/or a solid additive composition containing the additive, such that the functional fluid can receive the benefit of the supplied additive and/or contain levels of the additive not otherwise achievable by conventional delivery method due to the incompatibility of the additive with the functional fluid.

The present invention relates to stable functional fluid compositions containing friction modifiers with limited solubility in and/or limited compatibility with the functional fluids with which they are used and stabilizing agent. In particular the present invention deals with functional fluids used in internal combustion engines, such as engine oils, and friction modifiers that contain one or more amide functional groups, where the friction modifier is present in the functional fluid composition at levels that would otherwise cause the composition to be unstable and/ or hazy.

The disclosed technology relates to a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an ashless basic amine additive selected from a N-aralkyl a-carbonyl functional amine. The basic amine additives used in the lubricating oils of the disclosed technology impart basicity measured as total base number (TBN) without adding sulfated ash. Lubricating oils containing the basic amine additives of the disclosed technology simultaneously achieve seal compatibility, deposit, and corrosion control.

The instant disclosure is directed to a method of lubricating a sump-lubricated, high efficiency, gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine. Said method involves supplying to the engine a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, an anti-wear agent, an ashless antioxidant, a metal-containing detergent, an ashless polyolefin dispersant, and (f) a polymeric viscosity modifier. The disclosure further provides a method of operating a high efficiency sump-lubricated gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine while maintaining or improving at least one of durability, deposit control, oxidation control, fuel economy, and resistance to knock and stochastic pre-ignition.
