The present invention relates to a novel polymer with pendant groups. The invention further provides for a lubricating composition containing said polymer. The invention further provides a method and use of controling viscosity index by supplying to an oil of lubricating viscosity the polymer with pendant groups.

A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, an amino-functionalized acrylic or methacrylic-containing polymer, comprising about 2 percent to about 8 percent by weight of an amine moiety bearing a tertiary amino group, attached to said polymer through an ester, amide, or imide linkage; and a nitrogen-containing dispersant, provides reduced friction to an internal combustion engine and improved fuel economy.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation method for a block copolymer and to obtain block copolymers, concentrates of additives and lubricant compositions prepared by the method. SOLUTION: This method is preparation for a block copolymer including (A) a poly (vinyl aromatic) block and (B) poly (vinyl aromatic-co-acrylic) block and includes following steps; (a) a step preparing a stabilized active polymer block A by polimerizing about 5-95 mol.% filler containing at least one kind of vinyl aromatic monomer; (b) a step adding at least one acrylic monomer to a mixture of a vinyl aromatic monomer and the stabilized active polymer block of (a); and (c) a preparation of poly (vinyl aromatic-co-acrylic) block by copolymerization of the monomer by reacting with the mixture of (b) using a free radical process.

A lubricating composition, method of making, and method of use are disclosed. The lubricant includes an esterified copolymer including a backbone that includes units derived from a vinyl aliphatic monomer and units derived from a carboxylic acid monomer, the carboxylic acid monomer comprising an alpha,beta-ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof. The lubricating composition also includes an oil of lubricating viscosity. The lubricating composition includes no more than 2.5 wt. % of dispersant for dispersing oxidation products, other than the esterified copolymer.

The invention provides a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an esterified polymer. The invention further provides for the use of the esterified polymer as a viscosity modifier or dispersant viscosity modifier. The invention further provides a method for lubricating a mechanical device using the lubricating composition. The esterified polymer has at least 60mol% of ester groups having an even number of carbon atoms, i.e. 8,10,12,14,16,18 or 20 carbon atoms.

The present invention provides a lubricating composition comprising: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (b) a crosslinked polymer derived from monomers comprising: (i) 0.001 wt % to 7 wt % of a di- or higher functional crosslinking monomer; (ii) 30 wt % or higher of a hydrocarbyl-substituted (meth)acrylic monomer, wherein each hydrocarbyl contains greater than 8 carbon atoms; and (iii) 0 wt % to 40 wt % of a hydrocarbyl-substituted (meth)acrylic monomer, wherein each hydrocarbyl contains 8 or fewer carbon atoms. The invention further provides a method of preparing the crosslinked polymer and its use in a lubricating composition for lubricating an internal combustion engine.

The present invention provides a composition containing: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) an amine salt of a phosphorus compound; (c) a compound selected from the group consisting of: 1) a polymeric dispersant viscosity modifier wherein the polymeric dispersant viscosity modifier excludes copolymers derived from (a) a nitrogen containing monomer; and (b) methacrylic acid esters containing from about 9 to about 25 carbon atoms in the ester group; 2) a polymeric dispersant viscosity modifier, a borated dispersant; and a sulphurised olefin; and 3) mixtures thereof. The invention further provides a process for preparing the composition and a method for improving oxidation cleanliness of surface.
