Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an article using sol-gel method capable of forming a more stronger sol-gel body and/or reducing drying time. SOLUTION: A silica body useful for forming an optical fiber preform has at least ultimate strength of 20 MPa with the 10 wt.% decrease of water. It is considered that the strength of the silica body is obtained by precipitating silica on the contact part with the adjacent silica particle to form neck region. The resultant meshlike structure gives the strength to the gel body so that the gel body is capable of drying in a more severe condition compared with a gel body produced by the conventional sol-gel method and has more strength even in handling. The controlled precipitate is attained by conducting gelation at >=pH about 10.5 to be high in the solubility of silica and starting drying. The solubilized silica is likely to be precipitated by the controlled method on the contact part, where is the min. energy part, with the adjacent silica particle by gelating at the pH level and drying.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain superior dispersion efficiency by adjusting the pH of a silica-water mixture before or during dispersion when a sol is produced in the production of a quartz glass product. SOLUTION: Water is charged into the drum 10 of a dispersing device and an aq. soln. of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) having 25vol.% concn. is added as an alkaline additive by an amt. required to attain the desired pH. Fumed silica powder having 55nm particle diameter equivalent to the diameter of a sphere and about 50m /g specific surface area is then added in several stages while mixing part of the silica. During this addition, the dispersing device is turned at 4,200r.p.m. (about 30m/sec top speed) for 3Omin. Enough additional TMAH and water are added to a sol prepd. by mixing under shear if necessary and the pH is increased to a stable value of 12.8 in consideration of the measured value of final viscosity. By the addition of the pH adjusting agent, attraction among particles is increased and gelling is started. By the increased pH, the viscosity of the sol is increased and dispersion efficiency is enhanced.

Abstract: A silica body useful for forming an optical fiber preform exhibits an ultimate strength of at least 20 MPa at 10 wt.% water loss. The body attains this strength, it is believed, by precipitation of silica at the contact sites of adjacent silica particles, thereby forming neck regions. The resultant network provides the strength to the gel body, such that the body is capable of being dried under more severe conditions than a gel body formed by previous sol-gel methods and is also more robust toward handling. The controlled precipitation is attained by inducing gelation and initiating drying at a pH of about 10.5 or higher, at which silica remains highly soluble. By gelling and drying at this pH level, the solubilized silica appears to precipitate in a controlled manner at the point of contact of adjacent silica particles, since such sites are the minimum free energy sites for precipitation.
