    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain superior dispersion efficiency by adjusting the pH of a silica-water mixture before or during dispersion when a sol is produced in the production of a quartz glass product. SOLUTION: Water is charged into the drum 10 of a dispersing device and an aq. soln. of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) having 25vol.% concn. is added as an alkaline additive by an amt. required to attain the desired pH. Fumed silica powder having 55nm particle diameter equivalent to the diameter of a sphere and about 50m /g specific surface area is then added in several stages while mixing part of the silica. During this addition, the dispersing device is turned at 4,200r.p.m. (about 30m/sec top speed) for 3Omin. Enough additional TMAH and water are added to a sol prepd. by mixing under shear if necessary and the pH is increased to a stable value of 12.8 in consideration of the measured value of final viscosity. By the addition of the pH adjusting agent, attraction among particles is increased and gelling is started. By the increased pH, the viscosity of the sol is increased and dispersion efficiency is enhanced.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing an optical fiber strong against staining, and having microstructure and a reduced operation by workers. SOLUTION: This method of producing the microstructured optical fiber comprises a step wherein a cylindrical container and a plurality of elongated members extending to at least a part of the length of the cylindrical container are prepared, a process wherein the elongated members are hold at a predetermined space with respect to the container and at least a part of the container is filled with a sol including silica and the sol is changed to a gel, a process wherein the gel body having the plurality of the elongated members is formed and the gel body is separated from the elongated body or the elongated member is separated from the container, and a process wherein the gel body is dried, purified, and sintered and the microstructured optical fiber is pulled out from the sintered gel body.

In an embodiment, the core area 51 formed by the VAD technique has an inclined refractive index, the refractive index of the inner clad layer 52 formed by the VAD technique has a refractive index lower than that n0 of the undoped fused silica material.     Abstract: The invention is a sol-gel extrusion process which allows fabrication of both thick and thin wall tubes. For example, the process is capable of preparing silica overcladding tubes in a manner easier than sol-gel casting processes, and also capable of preparing relatively thin substrate tubes, which are difficult to cast. According to the invention, a silica dispersion containing a stabilizing agent is provided, a gelling agent is added to the dispersion to induce gellation, and the resultant gel is extruded into a silica body, in the substantial absence, i.e. less than 0.5%wt., of polymeric material from the gel. Substantially avoiding the inclusion of such polymeric material in overcladding and substrate tubes offers significant commercial advantages by reducing the time and energy required to remove organic materials from the tube bodies, by reducing environmental impact and by reducing the amount of impurities introduced in the tubes.
