Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide holographic techniques which use a photosensitive polymer medium. SOLUTION: The storage life of a photosensitive polymer medium is improved by sealing the polymer between glass plates. The hermetic seal is designed in such a manner that a material having high Tg or solder can be used as a sealant without damaging the polymer preliminarily held between the plates. The hermetic seal consists of metal foils attached to a plate having extended edges like tabs. The foils are attached prior to supplying the polymer to the assembly. After supplying the polymer, the foils in the outer edge part of the tabs are sealed by local heating apart from the position of the polymer or press-bonded by using mechanical pressing.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an article using sol-gel method capable of forming a more stronger sol-gel body and/or reducing drying time. SOLUTION: A silica body useful for forming an optical fiber preform has at least ultimate strength of 20 MPa with the 10 wt.% decrease of water. It is considered that the strength of the silica body is obtained by precipitating silica on the contact part with the adjacent silica particle to form neck region. The resultant meshlike structure gives the strength to the gel body so that the gel body is capable of drying in a more severe condition compared with a gel body produced by the conventional sol-gel method and has more strength even in handling. The controlled precipitate is attained by conducting gelation at >=pH about 10.5 to be high in the solubility of silica and starting drying. The solubilized silica is likely to be precipitated by the controlled method on the contact part, where is the min. energy part, with the adjacent silica particle by gelating at the pH level and drying.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a desired hardness, phase separation and holographic characteristics by using an optical recording medium containing a polymer matrix and a system containing a photoactive monomer and capable of optically forming an image and by forming the polymer matrix by a polymerization reaction independent of a reaction by which the photoactive monomer is polymer ized. SOLUTION: A mixture of a polymer matrix and a system comprising a photoactive monomer and capable of optically forming an image is prepared and a precursor of the polymer matrix is hardened at the original spot to form the polymer matrix. In the hardening step, the matrix and the system capable of optically forming the image cause phase separation and show a Rayleigh ratio of about

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new resist material which can be used for a lithographic process by the exposure of the radiation of specified wavelengths by using an energy-sensitive resist material containing a photoacid producing agent and a polymer. SOLUTION: This energy-sensitive resist material consists of a photoacid producing agent, polymer and dissolution inhibitor. The dissolution inhibitor is a condensation product of a satd. polycyclic hydrocarbon compd. having one hydroxy substituent and a bifunctional hydrocarbon compd. selected from linear hydrocarbons and cyclic hydrocarbons. The functional groups are carboxylic acid groups or carboxylic acid halide compds. The condensation product has substituents comprising two polyfunctional parts and one carboxyl group, and hydrogen atoms in the carboxyl group are substituted by acid- unstable groups. The energy-sensitive resist material layer formed on a substrate is exposed to pattern-forming radiation selected from UV rays and the like to form the pattern.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an improved recording medium in which a hologram shows desirable properties by including a fixing step to subject the recording medium to fixing after irradiation of light so as to allow the residual photopolymerizable component to react. SOLUTION: A data image is stored to an optical medium 14 by the interference of coded signal beams 20 and reference beams 22. A hologram is produced by the interference, and the hologram is trapped in the medium as a pattern of variable refractive indices. While irradiating a matrix of the medium with light, one or more photopolymerizable components are polymerized, and then after irradiation, the medium is fixed to obtain the permanent hologram. By this method, different from a conventional medium containing a perforated matrix, Bragg detune caused during forming the hologram or Bragg detune due to the temp. change are small so that the life on the recording face of the recorded hologram or fidelity of recording can be improved.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium suitable for use in a holography memory system. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium includes a glassy hybrid inorg. org. three-dimensional matrix in which an optical image forming system having >=1 optically active org. monomer is disposed. The medium provides the precursor material of the hybrid inorg. and org. matrix shown in figure and is produced by mixing the matrix. precursor material with the optical image forming system and curing the matrix. precursor material, thereby forming the matrix in the original position. The hybrid matrix. precursor material is typically the oligomer derived from the compd. expressed as Rn M(OR')4-n , where M is a metal element having tervalent or higher valence, such as silicon, titanium, germanium, zirconium, vanadium or aluminum; R is an alkyl or allyl; R' is a lower alkyl; n is within a range of 1 to 2. The hybrid characteristic of the matrix material renders several advantages.
