Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the bit error rate of a multi-level modulation scheme with simple constitution and to improve the reliability by repeating a demapping stage through the decoding of the base station receiver of a digital radio communication system. SOLUTION: A channel symbol is demapped, a log-likelihood ratio decomposed by log-likelihood ratio calculation as to respective gray-coded bits of N bits/symbols is deinterleaved and inputted to a postestablishment calculator APP and decoded to obtain the code of APP software output value of information, bits, and then transmit information bits are estimated by the output of a hardware determination device. A repetitive demapping/decoding path feeds back attached information being information obtained by decoding the difference value between the software input and software output by a decoder as prior knowledge to a software demapping device through a bit interleaver. Thus, the software demapping device which receives the prior information is added to reduce the bit error rate.

Abstract: The invention includes a method of inserting pilot symbols into communication signals in which a plurality of signals to be transmitted are generated; each signal is divided into frames and each frame consists of a plurality of blocks. A pilot signal block is inserted into each frame of each signal before transmission. The pilot signal blocks are inserted in a time staggered fashion, spread though out the frame. The pilot symbols are time-staggered using an arbitrary algorithm for the pilot symbol insertion. This enables each receiver to perform more accurate, continuous channel estimation and results in a reduced Bit Error Rate (BER) and an improved Quality of Service (QoS). A receiver according to the invention makes use of pilot symbols of all other users in the system in order to improve its channel estimation for user k and this gives more reliable data detection.

Abstract: There is disclosed a channel decoder for data encoded by serially concatenated outer and inner codes in which the outer code is a rate 1:2 repetition code operative to encode a data bit bn as two identical coded bits bcoded,n0,bcoded,n1 and in which the coded bits are interleaved. The decoder comprises a soft input soft output (SISO) inner decoder for which the input and output information are log likelihood ratios, input information being the log likelihood ratios of the encoded data and outer extrinsic information. Means are provided for subtracting feedback outer extrinsic information from the inner decoder output information to produce inner extrinsic information. Means are also provided for swapping the log likelihood ratios Ln0,Ln1, in the inner extrinsic information, corresponding to one information bit bn to produce the feed back extrinsic information. The coder is operative iteratively with outer extrinsic information produced by previous iterations. The pairs, corresponding to one data bit bn, of log likelihood ratios Ln0,Ln1 of the inner extrinsic information are summed, and a hard decision is based on the summed log likelihood ratios. The arrangement is especially simple compared with other decoders proposed in the prior art, especially when it is realised that the means for swapping can perform the swap without separate steps of deinterleaving and interleaving.

Abstract: The invention concerns a CDMA system, including a transmitter and receiver, for use in e.g. a digital wireless communications system and in particular to a method of and apparatus for mapping and demapping CDMA signals. The CDMA system comprises a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter includes an encoder and a bit interleaver for processing said CDMA signal to be transmitted, a mapper connected in series with the encoder and bit interleaver and means for transmitting said processed CDMA signal. The receiver comprises means for receiving said transmitted CDMA signal, a bit deinterleaver and a decoder for processing said received CDMA signal and a demapper connected in series with the bit deinterleaver and decoder. Iterative demapping may be performed in the receiver by passing back the output of the decoder to the demapper. A corresponding method is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of estimating channel impulse response in a signal transmitted over a channel in a communication system is described. The channel estimator obtains a priori knowledge about the transmitted signal, and then uses the transmitted signal and the a priori knowledge to choose an estimate of channel impulse response which minimizes the expected distance between the transmitted signal and a reconstructed signal. The expected distance that is minimized is a cost function, represented by E{∥r-Bh∥2r}. By using soft decision feedback, the invention minimizes erroneous decision feedback which can cause error propagation. The decisions are usually in the form of log likelihood ratios (LLR).

Abstract: The invention comprises a method and apparatus for iteratively decoding a multilevel modulated signal in which the soft output information of a channel decoder is fed back and utilized by a tailored soft demapping device in order to improve the decoding result by further iterative decoding steps. The receiver includes a demapper for generating a demapped signal, bit deinterleaver for generating a demapped and deinterleaved signal and a decoder for generating soft reliability values representative of the decoded signal. These soft reliability values are then bit interleaved and fed back to the demapper, as a priori knowledge, for use in further iterations of the decoding process.
