    Abstract: A frequency estimator is provided for use in a receiver of packetized data in eg. a TDMA system. The frequency estimator determines the signal frequency error ( f o ) with which a data packet has been received. It does this by relating data (gn) representative of some symbols to decisions (Sn) on those symbols. These symbols include not only training symbols (Nt) but also some information symbols (Nadd). The training sequence and input signal are fed into an equalizer and the frequency estimated according to "soft" and "hard" data and decisions based thereon.

    Abstract: A method of estimating channel impulse response in a signal transmitted over a channel in a communication system is described. The channel estimator obtains a priori knowledge about the transmitted signal, and then uses the transmitted signal and the a priori knowledge to choose an estimate of channel impulse response which minimizes the expected distance between the transmitted signal and a reconstructed signal. The expected distance that is minimized is a cost function, represented by E{∥r-Bh∥2r}. By using soft decision feedback, the invention minimizes erroneous decision feedback which can cause error propagation. The decisions are usually in the form of log likelihood ratios (LLR).

    Abstract: A mobile telephone system includes a base station which establishes a link with a selected mobile station. The received signal from the mobile station will include a noise component as well as a possible interference component from another mobile station operating at the same frequency in another cell. The base station has a trellis based equalisation system which operates on the assumption that the received signal includes components which have a predominantly Gaussian characteristic. A switch controller determines when the interference component (which is non-gaussian) in the received signal becomes a dominant component and operates to switch a spatio-temporal filter into the circuit instead of the trellis based equalisation system, to improve the bit error rate performance.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a method of recovering a received signal comprising the steps of: equalising (100) the received signal, channel decoding (102) the equalised received signal, wherein a priori information of the received signal is utilised in the equalisation step. The equalising step may be performed in a sub-optimum equaliser. The channel decoding step may be performed in an a posterior channel decoder. The a priori information is obtained by subtracting (110) the output of the a posterior decoder (102) from the output of the deinterleaver (104).
