Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of producing an optical fiber strong against staining, and having microstructure and a reduced operation by workers. SOLUTION: This method of producing the microstructured optical fiber comprises a step wherein a cylindrical container and a plurality of elongated members extending to at least a part of the length of the cylindrical container are prepared, a process wherein the elongated members are hold at a predetermined space with respect to the container and at least a part of the container is filled with a sol including silica and the sol is changed to a gel, a process wherein the gel body having the plurality of the elongated members is formed and the gel body is separated from the elongated body or the elongated member is separated from the container, and a process wherein the gel body is dried, purified, and sintered and the microstructured optical fiber is pulled out from the sintered gel body.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new fluorine doping method. SOLUTION: Treating time required for fluorine doping of a porous silica body to produce a fluorine doped preform for producing an optical fiber having lowered refractive index is shortened by the division of a doping step into a preliminary heaping step for heaping 'excess amount' of fluorine on silica particles and a drive-in step for diffusing fluorine atom in the silica particles. As the drive-in step is assembled easily with a sintering step or a consolidating step, doping treatment efficiency is increased furthermore.

The drive-in step is conveniently combined with the sintering or consolidation step to further enhance the efficiency of the doping process and is carried out at a temperature above 1300 DEG C in an atmosphere devoid of fluorine.

Abstract: The disclosed method of making microstructured optical fiber comprises providing a mold, with a multiplicity of elongate elements extending into the mold and being maintained in a predetermined spatial arrangement with respect to the mold. Silica-containing sol is introduced into the mold and is caused to or permitted to gel, such that a gel body results. After removing the elongate elements from the gel body and removing the gel body from the mold, the gel body is dried, sintered and purified, and the microstructured fiber is drawn from the sintered body.
