Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain direct interconnection between a packet transport system and a setup channel type line interface unit in an intensive communication network and a pure packet type communication network. SOLUTION: An edge vehicle 140 is connected to an existing main wiring board 110. Respective subscriber lines 171, 173, 175 from the main wiring board 110 are terminated by an access shelf in the edge vehicle 140. An incoming twisted pair loop traffic is converted into an asynchronous packet traffic and given to a data subsystem 144 of the edge vehicle 140. The data subsystem 144 receives packet-processed data from the respective subscriber lines 171, 173, 175, and the data are transferred to a packet data transport network 150 or an end destination (final destination) in a conventional PSTN 160.

Abstract: A communications for interconnecting standard twisted pair loop subscriber lines to a packet network without traditional local digital switches. The packet transport edge vehicle comprises a plurality of access shelves including means for converting synchronous traffic to asynchronous traffic within each line interface circuit. The converted traffic is delivered via high speed packet data links to a data subsystem where the packets are routed to an appropriate end destination either in a packet data network, such as the internet, or to the traditional public switched telephone network.
