    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide efficient calculation technology suitable for using it in channel estimation, channel equalization and other signal processing operations. SOLUTION: A signal processing operation is executed on a reception symbol system in a digital communication system receiver. Respective symbols show several information bits. The symbols correspond to points in given modulation constellations, which are generated by rotating regular modulation constellations (QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM, 256-QAM and 1024-QAM) by a prescribed degree (45 degrees, for example). Thus, the specified signal processing operation such as finite impulse response(FIR) filtering, least mean square(LMS) estimation and maximum likelihood(ML) system detection by Viterbi algorithm can be executed without the need of a multiplier by using the rotated constellation.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved branch metric expression on the basis of a linear distance. SOLUTION: This decoder 10 decoding a received symbol sequence has a branch metric calculation(BMC) unit 12, an addition comparison selection(ACS) unit 14 and a trace back unit 16. The unit 12 calculates a branch metric related to transition between multistage trellis representation states of a state machine. Each branch metric corresponds to a linear distance between a given received symbol and its most adjacent code word in a given trellis stage. The unit 14 utilizes a branch metric on the current stage together with a previously generated path metric for comparison in the case of finding a survival path to the current stage of a multistage trellis and a corresponding update path metric. The unit 16 utilizes the update path metric and generates a corresponding decoded output.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for generating error flags with respect to a digital audio broadcast(DAB) system and other types of digital communication systems. SOLUTION: The device generates an error flag used for source coding of a source coded bit stream, that is transmitted through a channel of a communication system. The source coded bit stream is subjected to channel coding by at least one channel code, a soft decision channel decoder decodes the channel code and generates one reliability criterion or more, with respect to a received part of the source coded bit stream and a designated part of the received part of the source coded bit stream. Different detection performances are employed for different received parts of the source coded bit stream, and a receiver can revise the detection performances dynamically. SOLUTION: The UEP is provided to a source coded bit stream 200 by a puncturing of a channel code. The channel code has a designated rate relating to a corresponding error protection level and is used for the purpose of coding a 1st part 202 of the source coded bit stream 200. Then the channel code is punctured for at least a 2nd part 204 of the source coded bit stream 200 so as to obtain a rate higher than the designated rate. The start of the puncturing is intentionally delayed by an amount decided on the basis of at least partially the memory of the channel code.

An E1 stream showing the 1st strengthened audio information is transmitted via a sub-band 305 set between (fc-15) kHz and (fc-5) kHz, and an E2 stream showing the 2nd strengthened audio information is transmitted via a sub-band 307 set between (fc+5) kHz and (fc+15) kHz. Both E1 and E2 streams suffer the 2nd adjacent channel interference. The minimum core audio information is strengthened by the E1 or E2 stream according to whether the sub-bands 305 and 307 are significantly affected by the 2nd adjacent channel interference or not.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus which reduces the start-up delay that may occur when switching programs in audio and/or video streaming applications while maintaining high quality steady-state performance thereof. A program source (e.g., an audio and/or video data stream) is encoded and transmitted as two or more separate bit streams (e.g., sequences of data packets), the transmission of one of these bit streams being delayed by a given amount of time relative to the transmission of the other bit stream(s). At the receiving end of the transmission channel, the two or more bit streams are buffered by receive buffers having different sizes (thereby resulting in different time delays when the contents thereof are decoded), wherein the time delay difference corresponds (inversely) to the relative delay times prior to transmission. Advantageously, either a multiple descriptive source coding scheme or an embedded coding scheme may be employed, in which at least one of the individual bit streams is sufficient to obtain a satisfactory decoded signal, but wherein the addition of the other bit stream(s) will improve the quality of the decoded signal. Alternatively, the data streams may comprise multiple encodings of the program source having different bit rates, wherein the lower bit rate encodings are transmitted with the correspondingly larger delays.
