Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the structure of an etalon which can strictly discriminate the wavelength of light propagating through the etalon without increasing the size of the etalon. SOLUTION: The step type etalon has a body which has 1st and 2nd opposite surfaces and transmits at least light having wavelengths in a specific range. The 1st surface is nearly flat and the 2nd surface is almost parallel to the 1st surface and has a 1st area at a 1st distance from the 1st surface, a 2nd area which is almost parallel to the 1st surface and at a 2nd distance from the 1st surface, and a transition area which has a wall having a transition point shifting laterally along a lateral axis between the 1st and 2nd areas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce an interference band or fringes and other optical effects caused by the presence of a sharp transition area by providing a plurality of steps on an etalon, each step having a substantially parallel land, and separating the lands of the adjacent steps by a gentle transition area. SOLUTION: This etalon has a plurality of steps, each step having a substantially parallel land, and the lands of the adjacent steps are separated by a gentle transition area 28. This relaxed transition area 28 is directly formed on the material of the etalon. Namely, an etalon material 20 constituted by a translucent material such as SiO2 glass has a top surface 21 for forming one or a plurality of steps. The part 26 corresponding to the highest step of land on the surface 21 is covered with the layer of a masking material 22. Directed etching beams 24 are applied to the etalon material 20. The gentle transition area 28, namely, the angle less than about 75 deg. is determined depending on the angle for giving the directed etching beams 24.

The channel (28) includes at least one surface (32) and the surface (32) receives a part of the light from the rear face (24) and reflects the light so that the light may not be incident into the optical detector (13) and the optical detector (13) may primarily receives the direct light from the rear face (24) in this way.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assure correct channel selection without turning off a laser light source of a system during a channel selection process in a wavelength stabilized control system. SOLUTION: A laser module 110 has a first output 120 connected to an optical link and a second output 122 connected to a controller 160 via a signal discriminator circuit 130. The controller 160 controls a channel selection process for the system 100. During the channel selection process, the controller 160 adjusts a gain section, a modulator and an amplifier as necessary to reduce the transmission power of the first output 120 and the second output 122 so that the first output 120 can not be detected by a receiver (far-end user of the system 100) connected to the link 120. The controller 160 initiates the channel selection process by adjusting the laser module 110 and monitoring etalon characteristics of the second output 122.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiwavelength etalon having susceptibility for each of a plurality of wavelengths. SOLUTION: The multiwavelength etalon has a plurality of regions 38, 39 having different refractive indices. By changing the refractive indices, the wavelength of light entering the etalon is varied, and thereby, a plurality of wavelengths between the reflection faces of the etalon are detected. By selecting specified refractive indices, the etalon shows peaks and troughs at specified wavelengths in the transmission characteristics. Or, by gradually changing the refractive index in the transition region 40 between the two adjacent regions having different refractive indices, the optical interference can be decreased.

Abstract: A laser module, disposed within a wavelength stabilized control system, is provided with an integral modulator and optical amplifier. The laser module has a first output connected to an optical link and a second output connected to a controller via a signal discriminator circuit. The controller controls a channel selection process for the system. During the channel selection process, the controller adjusts a gain section, the modulator and amplifier as necessary to reduce the transmission power of the first and second outputs so that the first output can not be detected by a receiver connected to the link. The controller initiates the channel selection process by adjusting th e laser module and monitoring etalon characteristics of the second output. By tracking the etalon characteristics, the controller can determine when a wavelength of a desired channel has been obtained. Once the wavelength has been obtained it is locked and stabilized. Subsequently, the controller adjusts the gain section, modulator and amplifi er to obtain transmission power for the first and second outputs allowing the first outpu t to be detected by a receiver connected to the link. This way, a channel selection process can be performed without turning off the laser module, or its outputs, and witho ut corrupting any data on the optical link.

Abstract: An improved stepped etalon comprises a transparent body having a steppe d surface. Adjacent step lands are separated from each other by a transition region which includes a curved, waved, or otherwise varied step wall such that the averag e height of the stepped surface does not change abruptly in the transition region from t he height of one land to another, but instead varies gradually according to the particula r shape of the step wall. In an alternative embodiment, the step transition is formed using a grey-scale or half tone patterning in which the average height gradually varies across the transition region. The non-planar transition region reduces the amount of coherent interference caused by the step transition thereby reducing the dead spot behind the step transition portions where interference prevents accurate measurements of light transmission from being made.
