    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus that carries a frequency component of information bits of M channels that is distributed into N wavelengths of a WDM distributed optical signal so as to ensure transmission of information. SOLUTION: The apparatus of this invention comprises an optical Fourier transform element and a multiplexer. A wavelength division multiplexed(WDM) optical signal comprising M channels is applied to the optical Fourier transform element. The optical Fourier transform element distributes the information bits on each of the M channels across N wavelengths (or channels), where N>=M. The resulting N optical channels are inputted to the multiplexer, which provides an optical WDM distributed optical signal comprising N channels. Thus, the frequency components of the information bits of the original M channels are carried over the N wavelengths of the WDM distributed optical signals.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synchronize a sample process with a receiving symbol by providing a means using the measured value of the frequency of a phase modulation signal in order to control sample timing for sampling a demodulation symbol, etc. SOLUTION: The 2nd part of a QPSK signal is made to pass through an FM demodulator 120 and generates the measured value of an instantaneous frequency being a phase derivative value from a phase including transmitted data. The measured value of the frequency is used for controlling sample timing, and subsequently, an instantaneous frequency output from the demodulator 120 is added to a peak detector 124. The detector 124 generates a signature to be added to a digital signal processor 126. The processor 126 generates an appropriate sample timing signal by using the signature and gives it to a sample timing generator 128.

    Abstract: An apparatus provides an optical wavelength division multiplexed signal having 2M optical channels such that each of M information-bearing signals are differently encoded onto 2 of the 2M optical channels. In particular, the apparatus comprises M inverters, 2M electrical-to-optical converters and a multiplexer. Each electrical-to-optical converter provides an optical signal at a different one of 2M wavelenghts. The apparatus receives the M information-bearing signals and (a) creates M optical signals, each at a different wavelength, by converting each of the M information bearing signals onto the optical domain via M of the 2M electrical-to-optical converters, and (b) creates M inverted optical signals, each at a different wavelength, by first inverting each of the M information bearing signals (via the M inverters) before conversion into the optical domain via the remaining M electrical-to- optical converters. The M optical signals along with the M inverted optical signals are then applied to the multiplexer, which provides an optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal having 2M channels.
