    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To create and measure an event provided with a continuing time for only several nano-seconds by stipulating a symbol transition time between symbols by a frequency measurement value. SOLUTION: The second copy of a quadrature phase shift keyed(QPSK) signal passes through a frequency modulator (FM demodulator) 120 to create the measurement value of an instantaneous frequency of the signal. A peak detector 124 catches a peak in a frequency output and creates a signature. A digital signal processor 126 gives a proper signature signal (signature event) to a call processor 128, demodulates a time slot symbol in a T/2 symbol period and obtains phase transition between the two prescribed symbols. The processor 126 monitors a T/2 window and catches the occurrence of the peak. The call processor 128 receives the signature event and seals a time stamp on it. The demodulated inter-symbol transition time is stipulated based on the frequency measurement value.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To synchronize a sample process with a receiving symbol by providing a means using the measured value of the frequency of a phase modulation signal in order to control sample timing for sampling a demodulation symbol, etc. SOLUTION: The 2nd part of a QPSK signal is made to pass through an FM demodulator 120 and generates the measured value of an instantaneous frequency being a phase derivative value from a phase including transmitted data. The measured value of the frequency is used for controlling sample timing, and subsequently, an instantaneous frequency output from the demodulator 120 is added to a peak detector 124. The detector 124 generates a signature to be added to a digital signal processor 126. The processor 126 generates an appropriate sample timing signal by using the signature and gives it to a sample timing generator 128.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wireless unit hand-off execution system that decides whether or not hand-off is required for a wireless unit and/or decides a base station that hands off the wireless unit by using the position information of the wireless unit. SOLUTION: For example, the wireless unit has a position system such as a global positioning system GPS to decide its own position. The wireless unit acquires the position information of itself and provides the position information to a base station in service. The base station in service detects that the wireless unit is moving away from a service area of the base station on the basis of the position information and decides the necessity of hand-off. Then the base station in service transmits at least part of the position information to an MSC, and the MSC can decide the base station that hands off the wireless unit. In other method, the base station in service can decide a base station that hands off the wireless unit.

A triangulation scheme where distances between a plurality of base-stations and a mobile unit (herein termed mobile) are calculated by measuring at least three round-trip-delay-values wherein each round-trip-delay-value corresponds to transmission of a downlink signal from each base-station to the mobile unit and transmission of an uplink signal, in response to the downlink signal, from the mobile unit to each base-station is described. It is a low-cost solution without requiring the participating base-stations to be accurately synchronized in time and with the added advantages of utilizing a known downlink signal and a known uplink signal in determining the position of the mobile.
