Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automated technology in order to automatically decide system configuration information and to assign an address on a common bus. SOLUTION: Each cell station 100 includes a hardware controller for making communication with a plurality of hardware components 130 on a common bus. When each cell station is energized or reset, each hardware component 130 reads an identification value denoting a physical significance from a back plane where the hardware components 130 are installed. This identification information introduces a bus address to uniquely identify each hardware component 130 on the common bus and denotes how each hardware component 130 and each component are arranged in a cell station. The hardware components enable the hardware controller to generate a map and decide the interconnection of the hardware components 130.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify a system and to reduce expenses by adjusting the parameter of a 1st element, based on information about a 2nd element which is received from an external means of the 1st element and making the information into a information which defines how one characteristic of at least the 2nd element changes as a function of at least one variable parameter. SOLUTION: An external means of radio equipment 20 receives information stored in a memory 26. Information about a transfer function of receiving filters 42 and 43 includes data, that is respectively stored in remote memories 421 and 431 which hold it as a single piece part, together with the filters 42 and 43 themselves. Then, when an element such as the filters 42 and/or 43 are replaced or when a variable parameter changes and a specific method with which the filter 42 and/or 43 also change, the operation of another element is always adjusted by information received from an external means of a processor 24.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radio communication system where the problem of cost and coverage and the difficulty of installation are solved by up-converting an information transportation signal into an intermediate frequency, transmitting it on a wire, receiving it and up-converting it into a radio frequency. SOLUTION: A radio communication system 400 is connected to a plurality of radio machine heads 401-1 to 401-6 from a base band unit 403 through one of the wires 402-1 to 402-3 of a pair of stranded wires. The base band unit 403 is formed of block radio machines, it receives an information transportation signal and a control signal from traffic signaling 404, modulates, channel-encodes and multiplexes the signals and transmit them to the wires 402-1 to 402-3. The radio machine heads 401-1 to 401-6 are provided with antennas and are arranged so that a dead area is not caused in coverage, separating desired information transportation signals from a multiplexed intermediate frequency and radiating the signals from the antennas by a desired radio frequency.

Abstract: A wireless telecommunications system architecture is disclosed that is capable of supporting a centralized block radio architecture and of distributing the information-bearing signals from the block radio to geographically-dispersed radio heads using relatively low-cost cable (e.g., twisted-pair, etc.). In accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a radio multiplexes, modulates, and channel codes one or more information-bearing signals and upconverts them, not to radio frequency, but to an intermediate frequency that can be transmitted over a low-cost cable. Co-located with each radio head is an upconverter that upconverts the intermediate frequency signal to radio frequency in preparation for radiation by an antenna.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for automatically determining system configuration information, including the sector, carrier frequency and bus assignment of each hardware component installed on equipment, such as a cell station. In an illustrative cell station implementation, each cell station includes a hardware controller that communicates on a common bus with a plurality of hardware components. When each cell station is powered up or reset, each hardware component reads an identification value (or a portion thereof) that has some physical significance from a backplane on which the hardware component is installed. The identification information obtained from the backplane is used to derive a bus address that uniquely identifies each hardware component on the common bus. In addition, the identification information contains information that describes the hardware component and how the component is located within the cell station. In the illustrative embodiment, the identification value identifies the carrier frequency, frame, sector number (such as .alpha., .beta., .gamma.), unit type and unit number associated with the hardware component. The hardware component can provide information to the hardware controller that allows the hardware controller to generate a map of the hardware components located within the cell and determine their interconnection.

Abstract: An operational parameter of a first element is based on information about a second element, where the information is received by a means external to the first element, and where the information defines at least how one characteristic of the second element changes as a function of at least one variable parameter. For example, in an illustrative embodiment, an adjustment is made to the output power of an output stage of an radio transmitter based on information about how a transmit filter located in the signal path between the output stage and an antenna, where the information received from a remote memory, and where the information defines how the transfer function of the transmit filter varies as a function of temperature. Advantageously, whenever the second element (e.g. the transmit filter) is replaced and/or whenever there is a change in the variable parameter (e.g. the temperature) such that the manner in which the second element operates (e.g. its transfer function) would also change, the first element (e. g. the output stage) is able to use the information to adjust its own operational parameter (e. g. output power).
