Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an amplifier having a flat gain spectrum in a wide input dynamic range. SOLUTION: The optical signal amplifier 100 receives an optical signal formed from plural optical signals having respectively different wavelength through input means 130, 5 and the received signal is amplified by input amplification stages 10, 15 and the level of the amplifier input signal is controlled to a prescribed level by an attenuation unit 30. The amplifier 100 provided with a filter 35 substentially reduces its wavelength dependency, amplifiers the controlled signal by output amplification stages 40, 45 and supplies an amplified signal to output means 50, 130. The unit 30 attenuates the amplified optical signal as a function of respective wavelength values.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a wide band light amplifier having uniform gain spectra. SOLUTION: A wise band amplifier 200 has at least two sections of a first (common) section 202 and a second (branch) section 204. After a light signal enters the common section 202, the light signal is branched into two (more than two) independent subbands. These independent subbands are respectively sent to the separate branches of the branch section 204 and after the subbands are amplified there, they are recombined to turn into an output signal. In concrete terms, the signal is branched into a short-wavelength (S) band, an intermediate-wavelength (M) band and a long-wavelength (L) band. These bands respectively correspond to each branch of the section 204. In am embodiment, the S band is in a range of 1510 to 1525 nm, the M band is in a range of 1525 to 1565 nm and the L band is in a range of 1565 to 1610 nm. It is also possible that one branch or a plurality of branches is or are further made to branch to realize a hybrid structure.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent laser oscillation of a WDM ring network by providing a node link and a protective means in a network, providing an optical fiber part and an access node site in the node link and making the protective means change the optical transmission characteristics of the inactive part of the trans mission band of the network. SOLUTION: Optical amplifiers 111-113 are erbium dope fiber amplifiers EDFA and supply optical gain for compensating loss in the node link. Thus, for instance, the amplifier 111 is arranged so as to compensate the loss in grating, a coupler and a fiber connector of an optical fiber span 104 and a WAD element 107. In normal installation, the node links, that are the respective ones of 101/104-103/106, are provided with the amplifier gain for canceling the loss by the fiber and WAD in the links.

According to the present invention, the required response time of dynamic gain control is selected substantially inversely relative to the number of amplifiers in the communication path. Illustratively, in a large-scale optical network (with signal channel paths traversing say, a hundred optical amplifiers), the response time of gain control in accordance with the present invention may be on the order of 5 .mu.s or even less.
