Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a PAP ratio of a transmission signal efficiently at a low cost in the OFDM transmitter. SOLUTION: A data signal is coded by using a complementary code to reduce a PAP ratio of a transmission signal. A complementary carrier signal of the OFDM transmitter is efficiently generated at a low cost by combining the complementary coding and OFDM modulation and executing them simultaneously. A complementary coding OFDM modulation system 10 realizes it by utilizing the similarity of a mathematical structure used for the complementary coding and the OFDM modulation. Furthermore, it is possible to revise the complementary coding modulation system 10 to provide a scalability. Thus, the OFDM transmitter is operated under various transmission environment. A scalability function allows the operating parameter of the OFDM transmitter system or scaling of the characteristic.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the multi-bus performance and to maintain the orthogonality of a Walsh code and also the low mutual relation characteristic of Walsh codes by deforming an orthogonal Walsh code by means of plural codes and improving the self-correlation characteristic of the Walsh code by means of the deformed orthogonal Walsh code that has a reduced self- correlation side robe. SOLUTION: Three bits of a 2nd set of 8-bit data symbols which are received from a converter 14 are supplied to a 2nd modulator 34. The modulator 34 generates a Walsh code of length 8 that is deformed by means of plural corresponding codes. The modulator 34 corresponds to a Q-phase modulation branch of an M-array orthogonal modulation MOK system 30, and this branch generates a-QW component of a signal to be transmitted. The modulator 34 also corresponds to the said three data bits and generates a Walsh code of length 8 at a chip speed of about 11 MHz that is controlled by a clock signal of 11 MHz.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antenna array system which reduces the cost of a radio receiver and improves ability by connecting antenna signals from a different antenna through the use of at least one delay line in the radio frequency route of an antenna. SOLUTION: The different antennas 14a and 14b having spatial separation and/or different polarized waves are contained in the antenna array system 12. A coupler 16 connects the signals from the different antennas 14a and 14b by using the delay line 22. The antenna signals are connected in a radio frequency area before A/D conversion by an analogdigital(A/D) converter 18 in the remaining part 20 of the receiver 10. The antenna 14b is connected to the delay line 22. The delay line 22 is set so that it brings the delay phase rotation of the center frequency of a channel to be received. The delay line 22 is set to the delay phase rotation of 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees, or the delay line 22 can be set to different phase rotation, for example.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a soft hand-over system to enhance the performance of a multiple subcarrier communication system. SOLUTION: This soft hand-over system uses a multiple subcarrier that simultaneously sends multiple subcarrier signals between base stations 16a-16c which acts as an up-link and/or down-link and a mobile unit 22. The transmission of the multiple subcarriers is synchronized so that a delay difference between the multiple subcarriers from different base stations reaching the mobile unit 22 is kept within a protection time. In an embodiment, subcarriers of a same set are used between the mobile unit 22 and base stations of different cells, while subcarriers of a different set are used between the mobile unit 22 and base stations of different cells in other embodiment. When the subcarriers of the same set are used, the mobile unit 22 receives down-link signals of the same data contents from different base stations. The mobile unit 22 handles the down-link signal merely as a multiple path configuration component so that the diversity gain is increased. In the case of a multiple subcarrier CDMA system, the system can use subcarriers of the same set.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flexible OFDM(orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) system which can provide the OFDM advantages to various types of communication environments by adding the increase/decrease control (scaling) to the OFDM system about its operating parameter or characteristic and accordingly improving the flexibility and adaptability of the OFDM system. SOLUTION: A dynamic rate control circuit 15 responds to the optional one of conceivable inputs in order to set a coding block 14 at an appropriate coding rate. In an execution example of a transceiver, for example, the circuit 15 detects a transmission error through the feedback caused from a receiver and dynamically reduces the coding rate. In the same way, the circuit 15 controls the number of bits per symbol for each carrier wave to respond to various inputs. In such a constitution, an OFD system can work in various communication environments where various operating parameters or characteristics are required.

Abstract: The combined complementary encoder and modulation system for an OFDM transmitter system combines complementary coding and modulation and exploits the similarity of their mathematical structure to reduce implementation complexity. In doing so, the improved OFDM transmitter system uses complementary codes to reduce the power-to-average power (PAP) ratio of the transmitted signal. Additionally, the combined complementary encoder and modulation system can be modified to provide scaleablity, which allows a transmitter to operate in various transmission environments. More precisely, scaleability refers to the transmitter's capability to adapt the bit rate of the data, so as to satisfy varying signal bandwidth, delay spreads, tolerance and signal-to-noise ratio requirements.

Abstract: The scaleable OFDM system according to the principles of the present invention provides increased flexibility and adaptability by providing scaling of the operating parameters and/or characteristics for the OFDM system. For example, control circuitry can scale the bit rate by scaling of the OFDM symbol duration, the number of carriers and/or the number of bits per symbol per carrier. Scaleability permits the scaleable OFDM system to operate in various communications environments requiring various operating parameters and/or characteristics. By scaling the operating parameters and/or characteristics of the OFDM system when control circuitry determines that different operating parameters and/or characteristics are necessary or advantageous, the control circuitry can dynamically change the operating parameters and/or characteristics, thereby providing compatibility or the desired performance. For example, by dynamically scaling the bit rate, widely varying signal bandwidths, delay spread tolerances and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) requirements can be achieved. As such, a scaleable OFDM system is particularly suitable for application in mobile, wireless communication devices, which support a variety of services, in a variety of environments, indoor as well as outdoor and in radio channels with differing bandwidths.
