Abstract: PURPOSE: To produce anhydrous magnesium halide from an inexpensively obtainable starting material with a simple method by passing an inert gas through a mixed solution of hydrous magnesium halide and an oxygen containing organic solvent to remove water by distillation. CONSTITUTION: The desired anhydrous magnesium halide is obtained by passing the inert gas through the mixed solution of hydrous magnesium halide and the oxygen containing organic solvent to remove water by distillation. As the inert gas to be passed through the mixed solution, a gas which does not react with moisture contained in the mixed solution of magnesium chloride, the oxygen containing organic solvent and water is used. And gaseous nitrogen is most preferably used from an economical view point of in these gases. It is preferable that the inert gas does not substantially contain water. CONSTITUTION:Diphenyl ether and/or 4-methyldithenyl ether is transmethylated with pentamethylbenzene, hexamethylbenzene or a polymethylnaphthalene having five or more nucleus-substituted methyl groups as a methylating agent under a relatively mild reaction condition to prepare 4-methyldiphenyl ether and/or 4,4'-dimethyldiphenyl ether in high selectivity. Hexamethylbenzene, octamethylnaphthalene, heptamethylnaphthalene, etc., are preferable as the methylating agent. The prepared compounds are useful as raw materials for 4,4'-diphenyl ether dicarboxylic acid.

CONSTITUTION:2,6-Diethylnaphthalene is produced by the transethylation of ethylnaphthalene (preferably 1- or 2-ethylnaphthalene) (preferably in liquid phase) using mordenite as a catalyst. The amount of mordenite is 0.001-500wt.% (preferably 0.05-200wt.%) based on ethylnaphthalene and the reaction temperature is 100-450 deg.C (preferably 130-300 deg.C).

CONSTITUTION:A 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene is produced by isomerizing a dialkylnaphthalene of formula (Naph is naphthalene ring; R is methyl or ethyl; R is ethyl or isopropyl) by using a catalyst consisting of a proton-containing faujasite-type zeolite or a faujasite-type zeolite produced by substituting a part of the proton with alkali metal ion or alkaline-earth metal ion (especially preferably Y-type faujasite-type zeolite, particularly super-stable Y-type faujasite-type zeolite). The catalyst is e.g. protonic super-stable Y-type zeolite or proton- barium-type super-stable Y-type zeolite).
