    Abstract: The invention is a process for purifying crude resorcinol derived from an acid cleavage product of m-diisopropyl benzene dihydroperoxide and containing impurities having higher boiling points than resorcinol. The process involves recrystallizing the crude resorcinol from a mixed solvent consisting of (a) about 0.5 to about 5 times the weight of resorcinol of an aromatic hydrocarbon which contains 6 to 10 carbon atoms and is liquid at 20.degree.C, and (b) about 0.1 to about 0.7 times the weight of resorcinol of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of alkyl phenols having a C1-C4 alkyl group and acyl phenols derived from C2-C4 aliphatic monocarboxylic acids.

    Abstract: In a process for producing 2,6-dihydroxynaphtha-lene from 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene, 2,6-diisopropyl-naphthalene is oxidized in the presence of a specific proportion of a basic compound to hydroxylate or hydroperoxylate 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene in a high conversion, and the resulting intermediate is then subjected to acid cleavage in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to produce 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene in a high yield. The yield of 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene increases by subjecting the reaction mixture containing the above intermediate to a purifying operation or dehydrating operation or adding acetone to it before it is submitted to the acid cleavage. 2,6-Dihydroxynaphthalene may be reacted with acetic anhydride to obtain 2,6-diacetoxynaphthalene.

    Abstract: In this improved process for oxidising 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene the oxidation is by molecular oxygen in the presence of basic compounds the total consumption of which at the end of the reaction is at least 0.06 gm equivalent (preferred 0.2-1.0 gm equivalent) per starting molecule of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene (the end of the reaction is when at least 80 wt.% is oxidised, preferred 99 wt.%). The main oxidised products in the intermediate mixture are the dihydroperoxide, the monohydroxy monohydroperoxide, and the dihydroxide of 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene. The intermediate mixture is reacted with an acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide to produce 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene. The reaction with the acid can be carried out after purification and/or dehydration of the intermediate mixture, acetone, if necessary, being added. 2,6-diacetoxynaphthalene may be obtd. by reacting the 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene with glacial acetic acid.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:Diisopropylnaphthalene is oxidized with O2 in the presence of a base and the product is subjected to acidolysis, allowed to react with an acyloxylating agent whereby the title compound of high purity, which is used as a starting material for liquid crystal polymers, is obtained in high yield. CONSTITUTION:Diisopropylnaphthalene is oxidized molecular oxygen in the presence of a base to give an oxidation product containing Diisopropylnaphthalene hydroperoxide. The product is subjected to acidolysis, an acyloxylating agent such as acetic anhydride is allowed to react with the acidolysis reaction mixture containing dihydroxynaphthalene in the presence of a catalyst. Diacyloxynaphthalene is separated from the reaction mixture.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To purify the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthetic resins, synthetic fibers, drugs, agricultural chemicals, dye, etc., by crystallizing crude dihydronatphthalene by the use of a solvent system constituting of water and an aliphatic ketone or aliphatic alcohol. CONSTITUTION:In purifying low-purity dihydroxynaphthalene which is obtained by oxidizing diisopropylnaphthalene with O2 in the presence of a base, and subjecting the oxidation product to acidolysis to give low-purity dihydroxynaphthalene and purifying, thence, crystallization is carried out by the use of a mixed solvent of water or 3-4 Caliphatic ketone (especially preferably acetone) or a mixed solvent of water or 1-5C aliphatic alcohol (e.g. especially preferably methanol, ethanol or isopropanol). The amount of water is preferably 5-95 pts. wt. based on 100 pts. wt. mixed solvent in both the solvents.
