    Abstract: PURPOSE:Acrylonitrile is catalytically hydrated in the presence of a copper catalyst to form an aqueous solution of crude acrylamide, which is treated specifically to produce the titled compound of high quality used for high-molecular acrylamide polymer. CONSTITUTION:The catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile is conducted in the presence of a copper catalyst such as a copper wire, copper powder, i.e., elementary copper, to form an aqueous solution of crude acrylamide. The resultant aqueous solution is treated as follows in order: (A) substantially all the unreacted acrylonitrile is distilled off, (B) the copper is substantially removed, (C) the product is kept basic and stood, (D) treated with a cation-exchange resin, and (E) with a weak base anion- exchange resin, to give the titled compound. EFFECT:When necessary, the polymerization of acrylamide in the aqueous solution is inhibited. The product is readily soluble in water. The content of the unreacted acrylonitrile is trace, less than 0.2wt%.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an agent for paper making, coagulant, a petroleum recovering agent and a soil solidifying agent, by hydrating acrylonitrile in the presence of a copper catalyst and a specific amount of acetone. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile is hydrated in the presence of a copper catalyst, e.g. a combination of copper in the form of a copper wire or copper powder with copper ions, reduced copper or electrolytic copper, at a weight ratio between the acrylonitrile and the water of preferably 60:40-5:95 to give acrylamide. In the process, acetone is present in an amount of 30-10,000ppm, and the reaction temperature is preferably 70-150 deg.C. The catalyst os kept away from contact with oxygen and a gas containing oxygen before and during use thereof.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:Acrylonitrile is catalytically hydrated in the presence of a copper catalyst to produce the titled compound of high quality that can make a stable aqueous solution and is used for high-molecular acrylamide polymers. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a copper catalyst such as metallic copper in the form of a powder of wire, acrylonitrile, which is previously extracted with water or subjected to extractive distillation with water to reduce acetonitrile content to less than 20ppm, is catalytically hydrated in a temperature range 100-140 deg.C. Then, the product is purified by treating with a cation exchange resin to give the titled compound. The preferably weight ratio of acrylonitrile to water is 60:40-5:95. EFFECT:The content of the unreacted acrylamide monomer, which is toxic, is reduced to less than 0.2wt% in the polymer.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:In the production of acrylamide by hydration of acrylonitrile in the presence of a copper catalyst, the aqueous acrylamide resulting from the hydration is treated with a permeation membrane to remove steadily impurities hard separable and purified. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a copper catalyst, acrylonitrile is hydrated to form aqueous acrylamide. The aqueous acrylamide is, when necessary, previously the copper is removed, treated with a permeation membrane, or is subjected to the treatment for removing copper, simultaneously or thereafter anionically exchanged, then treated with a permeation membrane. The membrane for permeation treatment is preferably made of cellulose acetate or aromatic polyamide.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To purify an aqueous solution of the titled compound useful for an agent for paper making, by adjusting the content of 2-cyanoethyl acrylate in an aqueous solution of acrylamide obtained by hydrating acrylonitrile in the presence of a copper catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile is hydrated in the presence of a copper catalyst, e.g. a combination of copper in the form of a copper wire and copper powder with copper ions, reduced copper or electrolytic copper or Raney nickel, at a weight ratio between the acrylonitirle and the water of preferably 60:40-5:95 to give an aqueous solution of acrylamide. The content of 2-cyanoethyl acrylate in the aqueous solution is previously adjusted to 20ppm or less based on the acrylamide, and the aqueous solution of the acrylamide is then treated with a cation exchage resin to purify the aqueous solution of the acrylamide. The reaction temperature is preferably 70- 150 deg.C.
