Abstract: A process for the preparation of N-substituted maleimides by conducting heat-dehydration and dehydrating imidization of N-substituted maleamic acids under azeotropic distillation of generated water in a solvent mixture containing a solvent capable of forming water azeotrope and an organic aprotic polar solvent, in the presence as catalyst of metallic tin, tin oxide, a tin salt of a maleamic acid or a tin compound which forms a tin salt of the N-substituted maleamic acid in the reaction system. E.G. N-phenylmaleamic acid (produced in situ from aniline and maleic anyhydride) in xylene and dimethylformamide is converted to N-phenylmaleimide using as a catalyst stannous oxide (0.025 mole per mole of maleic anhydride).

Abstract: A process for producing silanes represented by the general formula Si n H 2n + 2 wherein n is 1 or 2, which comprises (a) preparing a silicon-magnesium alloy containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Ca, Ba, Ti, Zr, Nb, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Al, Sn, Pb, Bi, Se, S and C as a third component element; (b) reacting the alloy containing the third component element with an acid in an ammonia solvent; and (c) thus, varying the ratio of Si 2 H 6 formed to SiH 4 formed.A process for producing mixtures of hydrides of a first element, which hydrides are producible by treating an alloy or compound of the element and magnesium with an acid in an ammonia solvent, wherein the alloy or compound also contains at least one further element selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, K, Ca, Ba, Ti, Zr, Nb, Cr, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, Zn, Cd, Al, Sn, Pb, Bi, Se, S and C as a third component in an amount which influences the composition of the hydride mixture.
